106" screen too big for NEC HT 1000?

842 Views 19 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Orc Hunter
One of the vendors for the HT 1000 states that "Picture quality and contrast started to diminish when the projector was pushed past the 77" diag 16x9 hi-contrast cinema vision Da-lite screen tested on. If you plan to go much larger we recommend a projector with the new (sic) Mustang HD2 chip"

Is this true? I plan on a 106" screen in a light controlled environment from about 13'

Also in the NEC manual, on page 45 I believe, there are about five lines on blanking portions of the screen. Does this mean that if I adjust the picture on 16x9 mode to fit the top of the 4x3 display area that I can mask/blank the bottom of the display and not have any light or black bar at the bottom?

Thanks

106" looks good to me. Plenty bright and deep colors on the dalite mat white. It sounds like your rep is speaking of screen door. If you view 1.75 back from the screen width you'll be fine. My screen is 7.6'wide and I view at 13' and just see a smooth picture.

You have screen postion adjustments to move that 16.9 image up or down. The blanking feature shuts off the mirrors anyway you want to. In from the sides or up from the bottom, whatever

I don't use it anymore because the black bars are very black. A good point on how good the blacks for the NEC really are. You can hardly notice the difference as you use the blanking feature to shut off the mirrors.
I'd also consider a Hipower for more punch.

It's a shame those who start out with the HT1000, Tom, can't appreciate what a wonderful improvement this is compared to all the DLP's (and other digital projectors) which came before it.

It's almost hard to accept that we don't even need to bother with masking a widescreen image on our 4:3 screens anymore.
I use a 1 gain matte white screen, 92" wide with my HT1K and sit 14 feet from the screen. Picture is awesome.
Thanks Tom and George,

I'm glad to see that's it not a big issue, although Andrea's comments in the other thread are contradictory.

I've been justifying why I shouldn't buy an HT1000 for the past month and spend 50% more on a HD2. It's getting harder to justify spending the money even though I can afford to. My electronics purchasing style is more buy and hold rather than swap and upgrade, that's why I don't mind spending more up front for a longer usable life.

Tom: Your "I told you so" is starting to look like it might just come to be true :D .
I use it on a 106' diag. dalite hi-power. Looks great. I think I would use at least a 1.3 gain screen if I were you. My ht1000 is ceiling mounted, so I''m not getting the whole gain effect from the hi-power, but I would still think it is about 1.5 or 1.6 gain. Whites have a good punch and blacks are black enough. Does 92" diag. look better. Absolutely! But I didn't build a custom theater to see 92" diag, I wanted 106 diag.

He's not an authority yet, he was off on the Yamaha.

Listen to Robert a new owner and he was a CRT guy. Robert may have to take up the slack for me now. :)
Sorry for this sideways question, but what does "(sic)" mean? I see it quite often. Is it internet lingo? Time to find out.

Thanks.

No way, Tom. you da man!

Actually, I think I must be what Wigggles referred to, unflatteringly, in another thread this morning as one of the "eccentrics". But that's okay. There's plenty of room here for both us

eccentrics and those technobabblers. :D

p.s. I'm kinda figuring that by now NEC has done the right thing

and sent you a free one. I'm gonna try for that too. :D

Hi Guys,

I am very familiar with the NEC1000 due to a very good friend of mine who is using one on a 10ft wide gain screen of unity. I am intending to post our experiences with this pj (including some screen shots) on the forum soon and I have nothing but praise for this little wonder. As an HTProjectors.com contributer, I dont particularly agree with Andrea's assessment. As Guitarman says, if you sit back about 1.75 screen widths, the screen door is not bothersome and the tweaking controls on this baby are awesome. Given a good source (especially DVI), the picture is rewardingly sharp and sparklingly bright with superb colour and blacks. The price is outrageously competitive and the only downside is the rainbow issue. My friend is very sensitive to rainbows but after a few months has now become 'aclimatised' to them and hardly notices them!! He loves this pj and previously owned a Seleco three chip 1300, with VGA resolution which cost a horrible $50,000 ( more than twelve times the price of the NEC1000) and was nowhere near as good a performer!!!.

Best Wishes,

Rich,

"sic" basically means as written. I've forgotten what the exact terms is, but it's used in many cases by editors quoting other sources verbatim with poor grammar and/or spelling. In this case, I used it because the vendor described HD2 chips as "new" and I guess we on this form would probably agree that HD2s are not necessarily new, but HD2+ chips are.
Tom,

Just to confirm, are those screenshots on you 106" screen. If so, very nice indeed .
106" yes, shot on a 92" wide screen. It gives you a 106" 16.9 image.

I get confused on what screen gain each shot was done on. I do know the Austin Powers & LOTR shots are the Dalite High Power. The Dumble Dor shot it a Video Spectra (not recommened, showed waves on the pull down model).

The gladiator shots are either High Power or Mat White.
SIC is Latin for "thus". Editors use it when citing a reference to inform a reader that the spelling or grammatical mistakes in the reference are to be attributed to the original source. Just another way of saying, "Don't blame me."

But what does LOL mean?
LOL is very close to LMAO :)
LOL = Laugh out loud

But, what does LMAO mean???
Laughing out loud & Laughing my arss off.
