I think if it can do 720p youll be happier on that machine. I havent looked at the list so not sure it wil sync up at 720p.

NEC machine is nice but tough to set up. I had a burnt in 9PG that I never got fully converged!

What do you mean by this? If you mean it will not do the full horizontal resolution, that is true, but it will look very very good nonetheless at 1080i.

PG Xtra at 1920x 1080i at 72hz.

Each black or white line is 1.1mm wide...

Yes, that is what I meant, and I am doubtful about the vertical resolution also. But Marks picture of a 1902x1080 test pattern looks nice, I will give 1080i a try once I buy a BD player, with a new setup using some more of the raster than current setup. Mark, how does the PG xtra recognize the 108i signal when looking at "source info" in the menu ?

"Mark, does the PG xtra recognize the 1080i signal as 540p ??"

It recognises the scanrate and the vertical refresh rate (in this case correctly as 72hz).

I've never come across a CRT or monitor that doesn't. I don't really understand the question.

At 1080i 60hz the vertical lines (1920) would be more defined than at 72hz (above). 1080 it does quite easily.

Uh, actually, 1080i is going to look a whole lot better on the extra than 720p. Unless you are going really large and the scanlines bother you. My 9x clone resolves 1080i brilliantly.

aside: I finally got mine dialed in at 720p about 6-8 months ago. Have been watching it that way ever since. Now that warm weather is here in the States, figured I'd switch back to 1080i, just to see how it looked, give the pj a break. OMG. Really feels stupid for watching at 720p the last 6-8 months. 1080i just pops off the screen. 480i digital cable looks very good, except when compared to actual HD. (Still using the VP50 - v1.04 firmware.) I'm guessing that the main reason I stuck with 720p was the "halo effect" - after working for weeks to get it displayed properly on my set, of course, it had to look better.

and yes, again, Mark has been stating this repeatedly for years, so credit where credit is due. I'm just chiming in as a second, corroborating opinion, and to let Mark know how good 1080i looks, once the 980 is dialed in to get 720p looking good. (sorta like my guitar rig - I can work for hours to get a Strat sound I'm happy with; then plug in a Les Paul, and its always twice as good.

Well, I guess it depends mostly on the source. I tried 1080i Ã* 60Hz out of my Momitsu V880N DVD player. Vertical lines and details do judder a lot. But with a HDDVD or BD player and the PG properly dialed in for 1080i, I have no doubt that it will look just beautiful.

Mark--I stand corrected.

Thomas:

The Momitsu does not scale that well (in fact, that statement is me being generous), so its 1080i is never going to look that good. But, try 1080i/72 and see.

Besides, it is not just HD that looks good at 1080i. Well scaled SD DVDs can look very good at 1080i also.

After all these years on AVS I am astonished this is still a question people ask.

1080i 60 is only about 33 kHz and it is invariably the most crisp looking resolution one can display on most of our CRT projectors, save for 1080i 48 which IMO is a bit extreme.

720p will reduce both horizontal and vertical resolution for HD sources compared to 1080i AND it will eat bandwidth, which by itself makes the picture worse.

We really should make this a sticky thread - beware of 720p for 1920x1080 HD sources !

Can I do 1080i on a straight 9PG (9000)? If so, can someone point me to a link that describes the Powerstrip timings?

Powerstrip timings for 1080i96

These timings work on ATI & Nvidia cards, and they will work on all models of PG and XG PJs:
