Should I set my HD Satellite receiver to output at 1080i and let my ED plasma (NEC 42VP4A) downconvert the signal to 480p ??

OR

Should I set my HD Satellite receiver to output at 480p (therefor having the Satellite receiver downconvert the signal first to 480p before outputting it - I guess...)??

Thanks,

For HD channels definitely use 1080i output - the plasma will rescale better that way. For SD channels 480i may be best - some HD boxes have a "passthru" mode to output in the native format for each channel, use that if available and let the plasma in all cases do the scaling to its native rate.

Don't forget 720p. My EDTV manual actually suggests this as the best-looking, and I agree. But I generally run native mode for 1080i. (I think it looks marginally better that way than converted to 720p, apart from a little added flicker; but native 720p material looks best.) For DirecTV SD (480x480), I run 720p.
