12 ' is a bit narrow, but could be perfect room size for a 7.1 config.

Three speaklers across the front, 2 side surrounds (dipoles), 2 along the rear center. With 40' length you could put in maybe three rows of seats, 2 or 3 each across. If you have some height, build platforms to elevate the seats like a theater.

have fun.....

Assuming it is a home theater setup, I'd go for dipoles in the rear (5.1 setup).

For 2 channel sound, should be ok as is.

I'd seriously consider treating the first reflection points from the front l&r speakers.

12x40 is a big room. You'll want quite a bit of amp power & a decent sized sub. Of course budget will likely poke its head in here.. so do what you can.

Alternately, if it is an option, considering dividing the room. 12x23 maybe..
