106" what? Wide? Diagonal? If diagonal what aspect ratio?
I find that a HTPC+theatertek with settings that allegedly produce .7V @ 100IRE (haven't scoped it personally) feeding a 1292 works well on an 87" wide 1.3 gain screen with a contrast setting of 85 and factory throw distance. If you like the same sort of picture you could probably go to 92" wide (106" diagonal) screen at the same gain. At 106" wide you'd probably want a 2.0 gain or better. At unity gain 80" might be better. YMMV.
Factory throw distance between lens center and screen center is 1.41 widths. You can use trigonometry to arrive at your horizontal distance especially if you are not using the standard projection angle (13.6 degrees). Or pjcalc.exe. Or interpolate from the installation tables in the dealer/install manual. The phospher border is big. If you have fresh tubes with no wear you might go closer. With wear you might need to go farther.
Your focus problem is probably Scheimpflug - the 1292 adjustment mechanism is NOT user friendly, and in some cases neither pjcalc.exe nor the manual values for the L+C rings are correct.
