Been there, done that. ;)

Hook up Doom 3 next.
The pic looks smaller than 130 inches, more like 80.
Dear god that looks terrible. I hope it was the camera, but then again maybe its the projector's low contrast?
I thought so too. The contrast looks really bad but honestly games don't look all that good on the lower end Pj's anyway. Not to mention it's a wall.
That totally white room is washing out the darks quite a bit. Try creating a black masking around the screen for starters. Is painting the walls too drastic?
Get some black curtains up on the walls near the front there and mask out the picture. It'll look 10x better.
Come on guys, give Sean a break. We all had to start somewhere, right?

How about giving him some advice on improving his picture, or point him towards the DIY screen forum, etc., rather than slaming what he has. "Dear god that looks terrible." indeed.... It's not like he was saying he had the best setup ever, sounds to me like he was just excited to get A projector.

I remember my first projector, (Infocus 730, years ago) and while it was nowhere near the quality setup I have today, it was a start. And I remember grining ear to ear :)

So enjoy your big screen gaming Sean-Blaire, and if you get the itch to improve upon it, take a look at these other AVS forums, read up and then ask questions. You'll find plenty of helpful people there.

No doubt, my first projector was only 400:1 CR, but with the right darkened room and masking around the screen it kept me plenty happy for a while. FYI, Sean, some pretty killer projectors like the Mitsu HC3 can be had for under a grand these days so might want to check around.
Congrats! I'm glad you like your new setup. But as others have said, there's always room for improvement so watch out. This can get very addicting.
Heh...it's funny.....although I have not purchased my first projector yet, even *I* know better than to cut corners and buy an entry level pj. I am finally getting close to buying my first one and I'm not even considering anything other than a DLP with a HD2 chip. Contrast and resolution are everything! I could have bought a rinky dink entry level pj like the X1 a long time ago. But it pays to be patient and save money until you can afford a kick ass projector that will net you an UNBELIEVABLE Picture(BenQ 8700, Infocus 7205, etc). I'm expecting to pay between $3500 and $4000 for my first pj :)

Not everyone wants or needs a high end projector. My panny L500u is more than enough for me, and his Sharp is probably more than enough for him. I prefer my pj to most of the 720p DLP's you've mentioned for various reasons. He enjoys his purchase and it works for him.

It may be "cutting corners" for you, but it isn't for the average joe.

Enjoy your projector Sean. The huge screen makes for a blast, especially when you're gaming with friends.

That's unfortunate, because with an X1-class projector you could have been enjoying great gaming for the past two years on a 4:3 projector that actually displays the vast majority of games in the correct aspect ratio without black pillarboxes flanking your image, negating the slightly increased resolution the HD2 chip provides. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I never found the HD2 image to be "UNBELIEVABLE" in comparison to other projection technology or slightly lower resolutions.

I own an X1-class projector and would never consider buying an HD2 projector, since they cannot support 1080p without scaling down. The projector I bought two years ago was a good choice because DVD viewing and computer gaming were (and still are) the primary uses for it. With HD broadcasting taking hold and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD on the horizon, the HD2s will be good, but the 1080p capable chips that are being released (pro models now, consumer models later) will be a better match for HD. Due to the maximum resolution match, these 1080p chips may prove to be the pinnacle of HD display technology for many years.

Paying a lot of money for a projector is not something to be proud of. If people want to try to boast--head over to the $20,000+ forum, and be prepared to be humbled by the equipment the videophiles there own. I would like my next projector to be a 3-chip 1080p model; in fact, one of the first cinema/videophile models was just released here ; however, it will cost about $100,000. Using the prices of extant 3-chip HD2 models as a guide, the initial prices for "consumer" models may start at around $30,000, and may be seen in 2006. Of course, what sane person would not rather pay $1500, like I did for the projector/screen combo I currently own. But if the technology levels off at the 1080p point, there will not be much of a choice--except to wait, which I will probably do until the prices drop from the stratosphere. Perhaps I will purchase a single-chip 1080p model in the interim. Hey--by then, the single-chip HD2s will probably be $1000 and be considered "rinky dink" :p.

Thus, until HD broadcasting is pervasive and Blu-Ray and HD-DVD reach critical mass, I will enjoy my "rinky dink" projector. Enjoy yours too, Sean-Blaire!

I agree, good post. Bashing him is not doing any good.

Damn near everyone did.
Great, I'm glad you are loving your 130 inches. I actually also PJ to 130 inches and use a firehawk screen. The screen makes a huge difference in your image quality. My FP was around $5K and the screen came close to the same price. If you fall in love with FP gaming nirvana....invest in a good screen. The screen will outlast your FP. You'd be amazed on the difference in video quality. I would suggest for your budget something like the high contrast cinema Da Lite screen. They make a pre-made 130 inch model that mounts to your wall. Looking at your room, the wall mounted type would suit you just fine and its a lot cheaper. You'll be glad you bit the bullet and bought now....no point holding out because there is always something better around the corner. Though, having said that I've been holding out for the sammy 1080p DLP for a looooong time now....
