Room size?

How much of music, movies, games, etc that you will be listening to?

Any other considerations?

Thanks.

I've got a smallish room (14 feet front to back wall) and recently went from 5.1 to 6.1 and it's much better. The extra channel directly in the back really brought out the surround sound.

I'd suggest at least 6.1, and since most likely he'll end up buying fronts, a center, and bookshelf surrounds - and bookshelf surrounds almost always come as pairs - you're looking at having to buy 2 pairs of surrounds.

Other ideas:

Infinity P363 pair: $400

Infinity P163 pair: $85

Infinity PC351: $200

1x Onkyo SR608: $300

Rythmik FV-12: $550

Total $1535 (5.1)

Klipsch RB-51: $400

Klipsch RC-42 $230

1x Onkyo SR608: $300

Rythmik FV-12: $550

That's $1480 for a 3.1 setup. You can add some surround speakers later, or add some Klipsch towers and move the RB-51s to surround duty.

The sub and receiver are almost interchangeable. There are a variety of great subs in the $500-$600 range that will fit your room well, and a number of great receivers under $400.

Are you in the US?

Any special features you want on the receiver or any size considerations for the speakers?

Well I live in Ireland but it means I can shop around Europe. I will take everyone's Idea and try and find the best. My Budget in turns of my own currency is E1200

Where are you getting the P163 for $85 each? All the places I've looked says ~ $136 each.

I like the idea of getting five identical bookshelf (like P163) + a sub (like the Rythmik).

You will get perfect timbre-matching and imaging.

For AVR, I like Denon (like AVR-3310/3311), Yamaha (like RX-A1000 or A700), or Pioneer.

I am a dork though, I thought that was per pair. It's each. Whoops.
