I apologize for asking such a basic question, but I guess I don't fully understand yet. I recently bought a 50" Panasonic S1 Plasma with a Panasonic blu-ray player. Is it normal to have black bars on the top and bottom of all blu-ray movies, or is there something wrong with my settings? I would like to take advantage of the full screen, especially while watching blu-ray discs. Thanks for any answers and advice in advance!

if player/display are set up correctly, the only movies you WON'T have black bars on are filmed in 16x9 aspect ratio.

otherwise, they're perfectly normal.

Welcome to AVS. There are a number of existing threads on this topic. Go to advance search, use the title search only option (located below the search word window). Use some of the following search words

Aspect ratio

black bars

letterbox

letterboxing

You can do a separate search with each of the above words and make sure to search in both this forum and the blu ray software forum. You'll highlight each forum for each word as a separate search. If you have additional questions after reading the threads, please bump an existing thread.

Please note this youtube video has Rated R language at the end and maybe offensive to some...the film makers attempt at humor....that aside he does a great job of showing a brief history of aspect ratios and cinematic examples.
