16:9 recording help needed

1086 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Church AV Guy
I was recently given a Sony DvD / VCR combo unit (RDR-VX515). I've burning HD shows to disk from my FIoS DVR box (QIP6416-2).

The problem is that even though the burner has a 16:9 ratio option, I still get the black bars on the top and bottom of my 16:9 tv. This happens watching something live or something that I recorded.

If I am watching a program directly from STB it fills the screen as it should. If I switch the input and watch the same program comming through the recorder I get black bars at the top and bottom.

Motorola STB's won't transmit a 16:9 WS signal via their Composite or S-Video outputs... the pic will be letterboxed. You'd need a DVDR with Component input and none made in several years for U.S. market. Last was Polaroid 2001G.

There are some converters, as mentioned in this post.
I thought that might be the case, thanks for the confirmation.
I can't believe I'm saying this again, but, wegotbetterdeals is still showing the Polaroid 2001G for sale at $80, even cheaper on eBay. That's less than the cost of the converters. I have one, and the component inputs work properly as a converter. The biggest concern is the store rating of wegotbetterdeals, 3.16 out of 10 (ninteen reviews on reseller ratings). Their eBay rating is much better, at 99.1% positive for 43337 transactions.

I am NOT endorcing wegotbetterdeals at all, merely letting you know about another option. There is a HUGE thread about this recorder on this forum.

Or you can go to D* TV HD-DVR or receiver, and record, 16 x 9, via S-video to you heart's content.

Cheers

Got one of those and it worked great (after I got a new fan and a new remote). Still preferred my panny in the end though. Tried to sell the polo for $60 and got no takers. I eventually gave it to a family member who's still happily using it.
I was merely mentioning it as a converter from component 16:9 to S-Video full screen anamorphic. As you point out, it is ALSO an HDD video recorder.
It is a very capable converter/CP filter, but only a fair recorder.
