i will have a fairly well-controlled room. What will light up a 10 foot wide 16:9 microperf screen. I briefly considered the Panasonic 7600, but some research showed that it's DVI isn't HDCP compliant, it has relatively poor contrast and needs an outboard scalar, I'm open to suggestions, not including $30,000 for a Qualia.

Thanks,

Well at 10 feet wide brightness is important. The Infocus 7205 is pretty

bright. Since the Qualia is out, then the DLP 3 chips are out too?

The Sony HS20 is bright with a long throw.

Dila's are great but not so very bright unless your screen is punchy,

in which case the JVC DLA-HX1U could work.

That's three different technologies that are about the brightest of their kind.

If Sanyo would ever get off their butt and release a version of the PLV-70 that can speak HDCP that would probably float your boat. Oh, and they need to price it about $1k less to be more competitive. :)

Those are the choices that I've gleaned from the forum. If the 3-chips street under $18,000, they are an option, but obviously I'd like to spend less. What screen is recommended for the JVC?

I'm running a SP7200 with my 10' wide, 16/9 Stewart Firehawk and it's PLENTY bright. Granted, I benefit from the gain of the Firehawk, but I'm also not using the higher brightness setting on the pj - so I'm pretty sure that you'd find the 7200 to be sufficiently bright for you on your microperf.

You're kidding, right? While I like the Sony, it is not anything close to being one of the brightest LCDs. And throw has no effect on its brightness.

The 3 chippers are not going to street under $18000 anytime soon. Hopefully they'll get to that point but I'm not holding my breath just yet.

I would concur that the Infocus is a good option, as is the Digital Projection IVision HD (about the same brightness as the Infocus).

I don't think the JVC HX1 would do the job on such a big screen. If you don't calibrate it then maybe. After calibration this pj only makes right at 530 lumens.

Thats only 9.4 footlamberts of ilumination on a 1 gain screen. On a highpower you may get around 23 which would work depending on where you put the projector.

Now THAT looks intriguing. How much is that and how bad would the screen door be?

Hmmm...good find Tryg. Vidikron has a 4000 ANSI lumen 900:1 contrast LCD and surprise of surprises Sanyo has one too. Anyone want to take bets on what's on the inside of that pretty Vidikron chassis?

It will be a 10 foot screen. Another problem is my seats are only 10 to12' away. I know, I know, talk to my wife. I'd love either an affordable 3 chip DLP,a bright LCOS or a higher resolution LCD.

I think the other problem you will run into at that size and seating distance is the video artifacts with DVD. They will be painfully obvious. Now HD, that is a different story and it should look fantastic.

Yikes. At a 1:1 viewing distance, you definitely don't want LCD. Even DLP might be pushing it as far as pixel structure goes. Why so large a screen for so short a viewing distance? I ask because usually those with such a large screen go that way because they have a very large room with a good distance between them and the screen.

I wanna know what Vidicron put inside there to get the extra 15 lbs. You think they added some cooling sytem? Or lead bars?

It's a big room. I could go down to a 9' screen, and move the seats back a foot, for a roughly 1.5 sitting distance. I have to work within the constraints of the room (and my wife).

I agree with Jason and the others: 1.0x is probably too close for enjoyment right now. Heck, I like sitting close, at least compared to a lot of people on this forum, but I don't think I'd do 1.0x until I had a 1080p projector and at high-def source material. With DVDs and 720p DLP projector screen door, 1.5x is likely a practical minimum.

But hey, different strokes for different folks. If you know for sure what you want, don't let us hold you up.

1.5 times the screen's width (not diagonal width) is generally considered the closest desirable seating distance for the HD2/2+ DLPs. So with a 9' wide screen (123" Diagonal Width) the closest you should sit is 13.5', or you will see screen door.

An SP 7205 and a 9' wide Firehawk make a nice combo. The Firehawk is the best at fighting ambient light, if your room is only "fairly light controlled". It also has an advantage in maximizing ANSI contrast due to dampening cross light reflections, which is especially advantageous if your HT has light colored walls.

If your light control is very good to perfect, a Silverstar or Hi-Power screen might match well with an S3 or 12000.
