I am looking to update my fronts in my HT. I listen almost exclusively to movies and realized my front speakers are showing there age (small and old). I am looking to updated all three or just the L/R. Because of room constraints I need a floor standing speaker no more than 14 inches wide and 12 inches deep. It can be tall but if I go wider it will get in the way of my screen.

I have a 7.1 setup with a seperate sub, so really what I want is a good crisp mid sound first and foremost. I heard a couple Klipsch at Magnolia a while back, but wasnt very serious then. Now I am.

I would like to keep the price for all three under 1K, but if there is a nice L/R for price, I could be conviced to just buy those. Can you recommend some models and brands?

Do you have to have towers? What about a good pair of bookshelfs on stands? What is the required dimesions for the center? If you can go with bookshelfs I would look seriously look at these http://www.axiomaudio.com/m22.html and this for the center http://www.axiomaudio.com/centerchannels.html . I use the m22's and vp150 and its awesome for movies, although on this forum alot of people do not like Axioms they seem to be universely hated for some reason. They sound similar to Klipsch just not a bright so that might be why. If you can go with towers 15" wide you can try this http://www.axiomaudio.com/m60.html .

I am not opposed to bookshelfs I was just looking for something with more mid sound and mid range. From what I have heard (not tons) myself when demoing is you don't get the range from a bookshelf that you get from a tower.

As for the center I am open to suggestions. I have been browsing and see that the RC70 towers come highly recommended, but that would be my entire budget on just the L/R. I would prefer to buy a set of L/C/R so they are matched.

I would say you have not demoed the right bookshelf designs or its not actually the mid range you care about but the lower frequencies.

Did you demo with a sub? Its impossible to compare floorstands that go down to 30Hz with bookshelf speakers that only go to 80hz effectively. Its not a good test unless you add a sub to both!!

If you didnt add a sub then you should ask for the AVR crossover to be set too 80hz so that ALL CHOICES get the same level matched tests.

A good sized Bookshelf can do mid range as well as floorstands, there is nothing inherent to the floorstand design that makes it better.

+1 most people on the Axiom forums listening to the M60 towers and the M22s blind listening test with a subwoofer, no one could tell a difference between the two. If your going to be almost all hometheater listening its better to go bookshelfs and spend the money you saved by add that too the subwoofer budget. If you follow THX's recommendation of a 80hz cutoff for the mains you only need bookshelfs, let the low freqs go to the subwoofer. For example if you go with the Axiom M22's over the M60's, you'll save $520, use that extra on a bigger center or larger subwoofer.

Buy something like these
Infinity Beta 50s on ebay. Comes with the C360 center too. I'd bet you can get the trio for under $500 + shipping.

Lots of great deals on used but still very good speakers. Like a pair of
Infinity IL40s on ebay. A beta C360 will match up perfectly - I know as I have this combo in my bedroom setup. They use the same CMMD drivers.

NOTE: Neither are my auctions - just pointing out some quality sound at great prices.

What size is your room? What subwoofer do you currently own?

BTW, Penngray gave you some sound advice. For HT you can get more bang for your buck by using bookshelf speakers and applying the cost savings to a more robust dedicated subwoofer.

My HT is 19 x 12. I have a JBL sub that sounds good on the bass end. Not sure what line of JBLs I have (about 8 years old). I have a yamaha center that is about 6 years old. I got a great deal on them.

I would definately be interested in hearing some bookshelf speakers. Can someone recommend a place in Northern VA or a good website? I would be happy to save some money and get a match set of all three.
