In a not so scientific study started at the beach today,

I decided to do a little arithmetic with the list of new releases for March and April of this year.

I noticed when I skimmed the new releases, the aspect ratio was listed, too.

Here is the break down of 2.35 releases to all others.

March - 90 releases 23 are 2.35 & 67 are others

April - 107 releases 23 are 2.35 & 84 are others

To break it down:

2.35 releases 23%

1.78 releases 37%

1.85 releases 37%

Others 3%

I noticed that blockbusters are typically at a higher rate of 2.35 aspect.

Just food for thought.

This should make people with 16:9 screens(who hate black bars) happy. I just happen to prefer 2:35, especially for the action flicks.

The most important item in your post is that the "blockbusters" do indeed make up the bulk of the Scope releases.

If one just looks at the raw stats, Flat releases often apear as the majority, but such numbers include everything from mainstream to obscure.

Unfortunately many movie theaters have based their designs around optimizing Flat presentations because of the stats and ignore the fact that they are actually selling more seats to Scope prints.
