just purchased a mit wd-65732 hdtv. i have an older 2.6 ghz computer with vga out. i want to be able to watch 1080p from this computer on the new big screen. is there a relatively inexpensive video card out there that i can stick in the old computer that will have the dvi connection this tv needs? will this video card do most of the processing so my old computer wont die of fright at the 1080p content? i am running xp2 home. w/ 1.5 gig ddr

thanks for all your help---i pick up the tv tomorrow and would like to buy the video card at the same time, so thanks again.

the computer is hp a250n....will all the video cards be compatible with this?

To do 1080p ....well truth be known I doubt that your computer will do it.

My computer is almost 2 times more powerfull than yours.

And yet sadly,I Know my unit will be far from what would be needed for Blueray reproduction.

Blueray needs HUGE RAM.the loading times are LONNNNNNNG compared to DVD.

Don't buy into Blueray or HDDVD untill the whole mess is sorted.

You didn't say what video sources you are interested in. Also you didn't mention whether you had onboard video or a video board.

Over-the-air HDTV is a slam dunk, you have more than enough CPU for that. The available tuners can bet placed in a PCI slot or attached to a USB2 port or EtherNet connected.

Playing Blu-Ray or HD-DVD requires more CPU than you have plus a modern video board.

I had the p4 2.8Ghz a while back with a decent video card (for the time) and it wouldn't handle the 1080p wmv files. Pretty much anything since then has ran them fine:

AMD Clawhammer 2.2Ghz overclocked

AMD X2 overclocked

Any Conroe system. I barely ever go over 20% utilization playing those same files now.

i have a nvidia geforce 4mx 440 agp8x right now. i guess that is plugged into the agp slot? or the pci? my computer only has 250 wat power supply, am running into a problem even finding a new card that will work on that supply.

i mainly want to play downloaded 1080p that has been compressed to about 4.3 g per hour or so. i dont have a blue ray or hd=dvd player.

You're basically screwed, go buy a whole new computer.

This sounds harsh, but the truth is your video card sucks, you can spend $200 on a video card, but you still might have quite a few problems with 1080p. The powersupply is probably okay, until you upgrade to a dual core cpu if it'll even work on your motherboard. So now you are buying video card, motherboard, cpu and power supply, and possibly ram.
