2 Port HDMI Splitter Issue

2279 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Doug Balentine
Been reading through other posts on HDMI Splitter issues and it appears it is mostly trial and error to get these to work. Let me lay my issue out here and welcome some suggestions on how remedy this..

Here is what I have:

Splitting the HDMI output from my TiVo HD to these two screens:

1.) Samsung LED U6900 in my bedroom over 50' of 2 Cat6. I get a perfect picture with this connection.

2.) Onkyo TX-SR674 which outputs video over 25' HDMI cable to a Mitsubishi 1000 Projector. This is where my problem is:

- The Onkyo puts out sound from TiVo with Projector off and the Spitter Port light shows a good connection.

- Turning the Projector On, the sound goes in & out, Video does not come through but flashes between blank and green. The Splitter port light goes in and out.

I get a picture if I bypass the Onkyo.

Works the same way with the Samsung TV on or off.

I have the Component and Digital audio on the TiVo feeding another TV... (I am getting my money out of this TiVo) so, I cannot use that as an alternative for feeding the Projector... unless nothing else works...

Looks like there is an issue with the AVR/Project combination and this may never work. Just wanted to see if anyone knew of a tweak/device I can use to make this work - Thanks

I had some similar problems driving two TVs from a TiVo HD through a HDMI splitter. Not as bad as yours (in that mine basically worked) but certain situations would lead to sound drop outs. I'm pretty sure this is due to HDCP handshaking. My TiVo was also driving the local TV on the component output.

What I wound up doing was:

1) Getting a powered component splitter (as just passively splitting the component didn't work).

2) Running the component through a component-to-HDMI adapter (also powered).

3) Running the HDMI adapter output to the HDMI splitter.

This gave me an HDMI signal without the HDCP. Solved all my issues. Monoprice has the component-to-HDMI for about $50. I found a powered component splitter for around $65.

Good luck with your issues.

Well, a component-over-cat5 system (like the excellent CELabs Cat5TX) that has a loop output could do the trick. Use that instead of the HDMI-over-cat5 and you avoid the issue, and the loop output goes to your other component-fed TV as it does now.

Thanks for the suggestions. The Screen getting the component output is mostly used as a PC monitor and so I moved the component output to the Onkyo to feed the projector and plugged the HDMI over Cat6 blaun directly into the TiVo without using the HDMI Splitter to feed my Samsung TV in my Bedroom. However, the HDMI blaun will not work without the HDMI Spitter. My splitter is an amplifier splitter and my blaun is passive... I guess it needs the power from the splitter to work? Also, the splitter supports HDCP and maybe it is needed to negotiate that handshake with my new Samsung TV? This is new area for me and not familiar how this all works... If the splitter supports HDCP then does that mean the screen receiving the output from the splitter needs to support HDCP too? How does this HDCP handshake work? Thanks

Just googled HDCP Handshake and found this great site with explanation of this process and troubleshooting recommendations:
