Well, I have an Ultra (of course
), but my younger friend has already spent about $300 on a Denon 1709 receiver and some nice Infinity Beta 20's NEW. Great deal, IMHO.

Now he has $200 for a sub (another $30 or so for shipping). That's it.

I have no ebay fear and I know this will likely be the route to nab a great deal. That said, I have seen the Velodyne Impact 10 and VX-10 for around $200, shipped. Can someone speak to either of these subs? It appears that the Impact is a better performer according to the Velo spec sheets. We're obviously not looking to tear the walls down, just looking for some good, reliable, low-end fill.

Also looking at the Polk PSW125 for $200:

Any other suggestions are appreciated. Figure this price-range will be a bit of a challenge!

Well, for $230 shipped, your friend is probably going to be hard pressed to beat the Premier Acoustic, PA-120. There are many happy owners here. It is only available from 2 eBay sellers however, but many (including myself) have found them to be quite reliable.

From pictures, the build quality appears good, with internal x-bracing. And I believe the unit it good down to 25hz or so and weighs in at nearly 60lbs.

Search the huge thread in this forum for further info. I had considered this very sub before I finally upped my budget a bit for a CSX-15.

I have heard the Polk sub and it sounded a little boomy to me. Neither of those are an authority on extension. I did read a review of the velodyne or a previous version in home theater magazine a couple years back and when they did a nearfield measurement it was pretty flat to the low 30's or upper 20's. I would go that route.

Thanks a bunch for this. I think we're going to go with it. As you said, if the specs and testimonials are even nearly true, it appears unbeatable at this price.

I've had a vx-10 for the past year....great entry/first sub for @$150 as a refurb. Just upgraded to the PA-120 and now can shake the house....never happened with the vx-10.....and, like the vx-10, I find the PA-120 to be very musical, especially when crossed over at 100-120 Hz.. I have Acoustech's as front stage and the piano black top matches them perfectly and looks great. Use bing.com and get 8% off of the eBay price of $229, brings the total down to @$211. Your friend won't be disappointed.
