The new Toshiba 65HX80 does not/cannot display 480p natively.

They upconvert 480p to 540p which will cause unecesary

artifacts.

Last years Toshiba 65H80 and other RPTVs from other brands

display BOTH 480p (DVD's) and 540p/1080i natively.

But new Toshiba 65HX81 RPTVs cannot.

Also, the new 65HX81 has only one convergence memory setting and the scaler makes automatic adjustements from it for all aspect ratios.

Any comments from new 65HX81 owners or those who saw it and chose another brand?

Yes, you're right about the HX81 not HX80...I can't for beans.

What I am talking about is the fact that the HX81 does not display 480P natively as did the H80 series of 2001.

It is native only at 540P and 1080i.

So, it upconverts 480P DVD's to 540P, which inherintly causes some digital artifacts which may or may not be visible to everyone on every DVD.

Since you have owned both I assume you had a 65H80 and traded up to a 65HX81.

That is exactly what I am contemplating doing.

I have had the ghosting/lines problems associated with the 65H80 and would love to hear you're coparison of the two sets.

Please compare and contrast the two for me if you would.

I've owned a 65H81 since 1 September. I have watched at least 10 DVD's via the colorstream connection and have noticed zero digital artifacts. Does what your talkking about apply only to the X series?

I have a Toshiba 57H81 which upconverts to 540p.

In the three months that I have owned it, I have viewed multiple DVD's, Direct TV, DTV rebroadcasts of local channels, HDTV Direct TV channels, and HDTV OTA -- I have never seen any digital artifacts related to the monitor.

I was concerned about the upconvert of native 480i and 480p to 540p, but after having some experience with my set--I do not have any concerns.

Have you had any of the "green line" or "ghosting" problems reported by oithers?

How does the set look on ABC-OTA-HD- 720P?

Also, how does your gerometry and convergence hold between TW1. TW2, TW3, Normal & FULL Screens?

I've had my 50HX81 for about a month. I haven't noticed any artifacts from the 540p upconversion on any DVD material. I do not have the vertical ghost line problem.

720p conversion to 1080i looks OK as far as I can tell(I've only had HD for a couple of weeks)...it depends upon the source material. For instance the 720p feed of Dharma/Greg looks gorgeous on my set, but the 720p of Drew Carey is grainier, but I don't see any artifacts from the 720p to 1080i conversion. I'm using a Tosh DST-3000 STB.

I did not know that the "HX" series would accept a 720p input.

Saam47, are you sure that it's not your Tosh STB that's doing the conversion from 720p to 1080i?

All H and HX Toshiba's will upconvert 720P to 1080i.

However, most all STB's will probably up to 1080i or down to 480P first unless it supports a "native mode" output.

Sean,

Yes you're right. The DST-3000 does the 720p to 1080i conversion. I guess I implied the 50HX81 did it.

In any case, the 720p-->1080i conversion can look very good. In other cases, less so. I guess someone needs to chime in that uses a native 720p signal to the Tosh xxHX81 TV.

Toshibas do not support 720P natively.

So are you saying that you believe that all H and HX Toshiba's do not upconvert 720P to 1080i but downconvert to 480P?

Now that I think about it, you are right.

The Toshiba RPTV's do rely soley on an STB or D-VHS/STB to up or downconvert 720P to either 480P or 1080i- but they alone do not support a 720P source in any directly connnected way.
