Victoria's Secret TV Show Will Return

Friday August 12 2:37 PM ET

After leaving its lingerie tucked away last year, Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is coming back.

The show, yanked from the air after Janet Jackson's breast-baring performance in the 2004 Super Bowl, is returning to the runway, CBS announced Thursday.

CBS aired the show in 2002 and 2003 before deciding to pull it last year in the wake of "Nipplegate," when the Federal Communications Commission cracked down on all things racy, raunchy and risque.

But the decision was more a way for Columbus-based Limited Brands, the operator of Victoria's Secret, to re-evaluate its promotion of its products, Chief Creative Officer Ed Razek said last year.

The hour-long show features top supermodels sporting the company's latest lingerie. It also typically incorporates singers, skits and an orchestra.

Victoria's Secret offered a Webcast of its 1999 show, but the site's server collapsed within 20 minutes when 1.5 million visitors tried to log on.

Won't be of much interest, unless they make badly needed production changes:

(1) They need to stop shooting directly into flashing strobe lights

(2) They need to stop MTV-style quick cuts so that no single view lasts longer than 2 seconds. People's eyes and brains need to be able to focus on something and watch it, and that takes longer than 2 seconds.

(3) They need to frame shots so that they appear closer than 1000 yards away, so as not to have any Janet Jackson-like exposure liabilities.

(4) They need to bring back the simple runway event and TV coverage approach like they first put on back in 2001, which was such a hit. The cameras tracked back and forth next to the runway along with the models as they walked down and back, looking up at them as the cameras moved in sync with them. Very dynamic presentation, and very enjoyable to watch. The "end zone" camera looking straight on at the runway was the one the models appeared to be walking towards when that view was selected, and when Molly Simms with her white wings on stopped and blew a kiss for the smile and shot that will last forever in my mind.

Etc., etc.

All in all, the first 2001 show was the best... with Mary Jay Blige singing (in pure white fur/feathers), models dancing behind stage, Tyra Banks in hot red (with all lights going to red) pony-walking down the runway to hot step-stomping musical accompaniment, Eva Herzigova in her red satin, ietc. This was the best produced, best written, best and most amusingly narrated (Rupert Everett), best constructed, best shot, best edited, best conceived, best lit, and most enjoyable of all the shows so far. Long lingering (and "caressing") camera shots of all the runway portions, where you could actually focus on the beauty of the models and the lingerie they were modeling. Add in flying angels suspended on wires, gospel singers, private up-close interviews with each of the 16 models,... now THIS was a show you could watch and enjoy!

It wasn't in 16x9 HD but the picture quality was really HD except that it was 4x3. I recorded it on D-VHS from the KFAA-DT affiliate in Dallas (which was upconverting their HD to 1080i) and it looks STUNNING! There was one Adriana Lima ad early in the show (where she walks around a circular landing in lavendar lingerie toward a camera which is tracking her and moving backwards as she approaches, pony-walking to some more perfect hot step-stomping music that was simply fabulous.

Let's hope the upcoming show appears more like the first show, rather than the garbage they evolved into over the next few years.

There's actually been some conflicting info coming from CBS about tonight's broadcast being in HD. Somebody may have missed a memo that it would be in SD, but there's at least some that believe it will be in HD.

Don't get your hopes up, but if you are one that will kick yourself tomorrow if you find out that it was in HD - better set your Tivos just to be on the safe side.

A number of people at CBS said that it won't be - but there was at least one other at CBS that said that it may be after all (as recently as today). If it is in HD, the vast majority in the chain are not aware of it, so I would bet "no" - but like I said, just in case.
