(IMPORTANT: Please read the instructions below before installing new firmware)

Dear Beta Test Participants,

We are posting a new beta firmware version today. The firmware can be downloaded from http://128.242.116.6/download/UPG20081229.zip

This firmware version is compiled from our Profile 2.0 code branch. The Profile 1.1 code branch will no longer be developed and all improvements/fixes are being migrated to the 2.0 branch. Due to significant amount of change in the firmware code, special cautions must be observed in order to ensure a successful installation:

The BDP-83 player must have the 1212 or 1219 firmware already installed before upgrading to this version. Upgrading from any version before 1212 will cause the player to stop working.

Once upgraded to the Profile 2.0 versions (1219 and later), you cannot go back to a Profile 1.1 firmware version (1212 and earlier). Doing so will cause the player to stop working.

Please follow these steps to upgrade the firmware:

Turn on the player and check its firmware version from its Setup Menu – Device Setup – Firmware Information. The main version must be BDP83-22-1212 or BDP83-01-1219-V2 before you proceed with upgrading to 1229. If the main version is earlier than BDP83-22-1212, you must first upgrade to the 1212 version using the firmware available here: http://128.242.116.6/download/UPG20081212.zip

After you confirm that the player currently has firmware version 1212 or later installed, you may proceed to upgrade to 1229 using the normal upgrade procedures: http://128.242.116.6/download/BDP-83_FW_Instruction.pdf

The main firmware version number is BDP83-02-1226-V2 after upgrading.

Alternatively, if you have version 1219 already installed and the network connection already working, you can try upgrading via Internet (Setup Menu – Device Setup – Firmware Upgrade – Via Internet). The process is not refined but should work if you wait long enough for it to search and download the firmware file.

This revision includes mostly improvements/fixes ported from the Profile 1.1 branch. The major items include:

A/V synchronization improvements. Please report any lip sync issues along with what type of audio track and what type of output configuration (bitstream, PCM or analog)

DVD 24p conversion

Retaining setup menu values across firmware updates

Fixing the OSD, setup menu and disc menu truncation after playing 480i contents

Fixing the problem of not playing the last track of some CDs.

Adjustment for pixel cropping and image shifting

Fix for the flashing line at the bottom of zoomed in SD content.

Fixing the stutter issue when playing some clips in the Divxtest.com test disc.

New improvements and fixes include:

Frame by frame forward and reverse. Press the PAUSE button to pause the video, and then press the FWD or REV button.

Fixing a color inversion problem with some BD-Live sites.

Fix for the thump sound after playing an SACD using DSD over HDMI output. Please test and let us know the result if you previously experienced this problem.

Manual IP address configuration.

Known Issues:

Combing when playing the DVE A/V sync test clip (SD version)

Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thank you very much for the help in this beta test process.

Best regards,

Oh WOW! I tried using the internet method of updating through the 83 wireless connection. There was a brief wait apparently while the file was downloaded. Then the update proceeded just as if I had a USB stick connected.

It took all of a couple of minutes. Success!

Me too! That was easy breezy baby.

Looks like all of my settings are retained. Will do some testing later.

I threw in Hancock BR. Was having trouble loading the BDLive portion last night.

With new fw installed now, I clicked on BDLive and it froze there for a few moments, then the screen went black and diplay on the -83 read all 0s. After a few moments a spinning BDLive logo is on screen, than a minute later everything finally loads. So it did get there, eventually.

Another comment to add to my screen saver concerns. Like how at the END of some BR discs, the pop menu for extra features comes on, and the screen saver never does?

Well, when BDLive is accessed, that screen too seems to be burning it's way into the display with no screen saver... again.

Noice (nice). Did the network update and it took about a minute and a half total. This is sweet. This will be the player to get for the old foges who don't even own USB keys and aren't gonna be able to deal with the constant DRM related firmware updates.

Popped in Kung Fu Panda and the A/V sync problems seem cleared up so far, with trueHD bitstreamed. However, at the 10:40 mark, track 4, there was a series of audio dropouts. I couldn't repeat it. It's not a rental disc and my first time watching this flick, the disc is clean.

When did this start? Was it there for the last firmware?... I can't remember if I checked it or not. Anyway, it sure is nice to have it now. A nice seamless transition from track to track via DSD for DSotM.

WOAH are you serious? I didn't realize this was possible (I thought it was coded that way on the disc!) I actually returned my DSOTM to Amazon because I couldn't live with that problem. If this is true (no audible detection of changing tracks whatsoever), then I definitely need to repurchase ASAP (although its far from my fave PF album).

More dropouts 24:14, 32:14, 37:35, 40:14. They are riddled all over. Is anybody else having this problem with other discs?

Yes, I'm serious. Not even a hint of a pause or hitch in the transition. Perfectly seamless.

Screen-saver in ON position seems to be broken

^Those were noted with Blu-ray discs on pause.

I then had DSotM:SACD playing and left the room. Came back about 25 minutes later and the disc played out to the end and player was stoped and the screen saver was ON
.

Maybe just broken with Blu-ray? Or maybe just broken when PAUSED?

Kung Fu Panda is totally broken for me: audio dropout and video stutter every 2'40", and an echo sound effect (PCM over HDMI directly to TV)
