2021 Sony BRAVIA XR a80j OLED Owner's Thread (No Price Talk)

just pulled the trigger on a 77 inch a80j. Expect to receive it by the end of the first week of May.

This thread is for owner's to share their experience, report issues, and help and share with other owners.

As the two HDMI 2.1 inputs with one required for eARC has been beaten to death on the a90j threads, please keep this thread clean. Also as owner's have already bought this set there is no need for non owners to weigh that they believe the Sony a90j or LG G1 is "better". We bought this set because we believed it was the best set for us.

I will create a Sony a80j anticipation thread which can be used to post comparison reviews and to discuss such topics as why you may believe it is better than the LG G1 or why we are buying this instead of the a90j for example.

I am coming from a 65 inch Sony a8g that replaced a LG B6. Prior to OLED, owned a Panasonic 65 inch GT50 which replaced a 60 inch Pio Elite KURO. Prior to that owned various DLPs, RPTVs, etc.

I typically upgrade every 2 to 3 years if there is something to upgrade to ( the KURO lasted over a half a dozen years and would have likely lasted even longer had it not crapped out on me ).

Really looking forward to the additional 12 inches of diagonal real estate, slight increase in brightness and color volume, and improved black level detail via the new XR processing chip.

This should hold me over for a few years until 8K content becomes more prevalent and an 88 inch 8K OLED flagship streets for around $8K ;-)

Will start posting impressions on the 77 inch a80j as soon as I receive it.

Hahaha good one. It is in my cart at COSTCO.... just need to press checkout. But I will wait a little because with LG C1 at the same price as the A80J, pretty sure LG will drop the price soon and Sony will offer a small discount as countermeasures. But in the other hands, I have 90days to price match with COSTCO Canada right?
Unfortunately looks like it's only 30 days to request a price adjustment: Price Adjustment - Costco.ca Orders

Funny how you can get price adjustment in 30days but return your item in 90days

Yeah it's slightly annoying. I've been patiently waiting to pull the trigger on a 65" A80J and thought I'd have 90 days to adjust the price. But with it being only 30 days, I'm going to have to try and hold out until later in the summer. Let's see if I have the patience for that hah!

My experience with Costco - U.S.:
I bought a cheap small Samsung TV for my home office.

After I bought it, it had a price drop,

I went back to Costco after ~60 days and found a seasoned manager training a new manager. The seasoned manager got interrupted with a phone call so the trainee took over. He told me I could not take advantage of the price drop. I told him I would return the TV and buy another one at the lower price, I pointed out that it would probably cost Costco more to process the return then to make good on the price drop. The seasoned manager was finished with her phone call and she was listening to us go back and forth (politely). She decided to intervene and gave me my price drop refund on the spot. Perhaps she taught the trainee a lesson in the process.

I realize returning a 65" or 77" OLED is a super PITA but if the price drop were significant enough, I give serious consideration to returning it. Minimally before returning it, I would seek out the Costco manager and try to work it out without returning the TV within the 90 day return window. It never hurts to ask.

Glowing review from B the Installer..

Looks like it’s the same tv as the A90J just without the heatsink and alittle extra brightness and just as good if not better than LG’s G1. :) The XR processor in both the A90J and A80J is the game changer. Can’t wait to get my 77” A80J and as the same price as the 65” A90J. The little extra brightness means nothing to me as it will be in my basement but either way I doubt it matters unless you had both side by side.

I honestly don’t think he is as good as say Vincent T. He never shows technical stuff just TVs that might as well be in vivid mode.
Anyone can hang two TVs and make comparisons. Looks like click bait. If I’m mistaken and he’s as good as Jrrf or D-Nice I tip my hat, but I doubt it. Besides earlier reviews have clearly shown more than 100 nits difference in various modes and %windows between A80J and the A90J.

He isn't trying to be on the level of those people. He is more so for the average Joe

Although attacked by the usual suspects for saying it. I told you the 80j had a sort of matte like screen compared to the 90j.

If it does have a "matte like screen" it would be the only OLED to ever have one...

And it would be a shame - as mentioned before a glossy screen increases perceived contrast, richer colors, blacks, etc...
From all the reviews we've seen so far (albeit limited), obviously the A80J offers better dollars-per-performance than the A90J. With current pricing the A90J is only for those that want to know they have the best of the best and price is not a factor for them. The A90J vs. A80J discussion will become much more compelling later this year when the heavy discounts enter the picture.

As much as I really don't want to go Sony after getting shafted with the x900h and their terrible support, I am considering the 77 a80j. Since my C1 has four bad pixels I was debating about exchanging it for another or getting the G1, as SDR gaming on the C1 can't go over 250 nits. Coming from the 85 inch x900h and a Samsung KS8000 prior to that, SDR gaming just really lacks the brightness that I'm used to.

Can anyone measure the SDR game mode brightness on a 10% window with color temp set to expert1 (assuming that's still the closest to D65 on the A80J)?

I was hoping the relaxed abl on the G1 would be enough to boost SDR gaming a bit, but it's still not in stock and only have a few days left on my return period.

Also does anyone have a picture of the EOTF curve of the A80J yet to see if it has the same low-end dip that the LG has in SDR and HDR?

Watch the new video of tech with kg on youtube. It's very gaming centric.

I’m confused why you are so concerned with SDR gaming as if you have Xbox series X isn’t it all hdr?
