I don't think it's compression that's the issue. It's just excessively sharpened.

I'm not seeing the tell-tale signs of sharpening... I'm guessing that it's just the film stock they used on an old movie. It's also possible that Criterion is scanning from a second generation source.

i'm also not seeing any tell-tale signs of sharpening but i am seeing some blocking especially in the first shot

There are the woeful sharpening filters most pro video seems to use, and then there are proper sharpening filters.. though both are quite useless, the latter kind doesn't result in massive halos everywhere.

Looks harsher, more digital.. less analog, less film-like. But does not have that much more haloing.
