I'm replacing a TV that my kids use and looking for some advice. The biggest issue I have is I am a Tv junkie and when I have the opportunity to buy a TV, I usually go BIG. I have a 42" Panny Plasma, a 37" Sharp Aquos LCD, and a 70" Sony LCD GW....all right next to one another (j/k). My goal was to rid the house of Direct view sets due to the size and weight. I'm also a 16X9 fan. ANyway, a TV for the kids is mostly for PS2 and DVDs as well as a Tivo unit full of kids stuff. I don't have an HD receiver going into this unit and don't plan on doing that. What is a good, economical, smaller footprint Direct view, that you would recommend in the 27 inch group? I really want the something under $350.

Thanks.

I am also looking for a 27inch flrat screen crt. For DVD's and the xbox. I am considering the sony, but its about $400. Something less expensive would be better. Any advice?

I'd take a look at the Toshiba 27AF44 also. It's got a very good picture and is less expensive than the Sony. People have also had good things to say about the Sharp's (27F540 or something like that.) The case on the Sharp seemed to be smaller in overall size than either the Sony or Toshiba.

The Toshiba 27AFX54 is an excellent SD TV also. Has a surprisingly sharp picture. You can usually find demo units and open box specials for $350 and under. I am impressed with this TV.

cabber,

Also consider the Sharp27F461(I think that is the number) found at Best Buy.

The 32" version of that set get's rave reviews from people who have it, so I would imagine the 27" version is just as good. Sharp also has a pretty good repair history, at least according to Consumer reports(very few breakdowns)

Here is a link:

It has the V-compression which allows all the lines of resolution to be used in a 16:9 picture, and none are wasted on the black bars above and below(not that your kid's will care).

If you think about the Toshiba, try to find a leftover 27AF43. This may be real tough, but you could get them at a steal, they also have the v-compression(which the newer 27AF44 DOES NOT). Try Best Buy, Sears, and other Brick and motar stores for that one.

The Sharp though is good deal, and will probably be cheap this weekend because of the Presiden't day sales taking place this Sunday and Monday.

STEELERSRULE thanks for the tip on the Sharp. I went to the BB near me and picked up the 27F641. It has a very nice picture and the sound is pretty good thru the stereo speakers. The v-compression is a very nice feature as well.
