2910 brightness/contrast calibration question...

320 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Bob Pariseau
OK...

I have now calibrated my HT1000 with the Denon 2910 set to the extremes of...

A) Black Level ENHANCED and Setup at 0 IRE

B) Black Level NORMAL and Setup at 7.5 IRE.

Setting A allows the the HT1000 to operate with the RGB brightness controls very close to their factory defaults of "0".

Setting B has the HT1000 running with the RGB brightness in the "-30" range.

Contrast settings vary a little as well, but not as much as the brightness.

In theory, is it best to operate the 2910 video output to keep the HT1000 settings closer to their factory defaults after calibration?

There is also a middle ground which I have not calibrated for, a setting C with the 2910 Black Level NORMAL and Setup at 0 IRE. I assume the RGB brightness settings for the HT1000 would then fall in between my current A & B settings.

I have not been able to detect any obvious problems or advanatges with the bi-polar A & C settings.

I am leaning toward calibrating for the middle ground Setting C, figuring it would provide the best all around head room.

I would love top hear any input you might have.

A more descriptive topic.

Seriously, Setting A would seem to be the better setting.

At or near center range is what most manufacturers work towards (except for "picture" or "contrast" setting).

Thanks for your input Paul.

I'm glad you went back and added in some extra comments beyond your thread topic criticism.

Be sure to check that 0 IRE and Enhanced are passing "Blacker than Black" data properly. I seem to recall the usual recommended setting for the Denon players is actually 0 IRE and Normal to avoid problems with this.

When I briefly had the DVD-1910, ENHANCED, produced the proper output for "Blacker than Black" via DVI.

Paul,

Well I knew one was supposed to be right and the other wrong, so it's worth a double check. As I recall it gets even more confusing because the correct answer is the other way around if you select 7.5 IRE blacks.
