Yea! My second Ruby has minimal misconvergance. Less than 1 pixel. Very satisfactory.

Good to hear. How about the black level uniformity? :)

Good to hear that your second unit was much better. I wonder how much the convergence is decided in the factory and how much is a transport lottery.

Has wm´s comment helped you learn which controls that can improve black frame uniformity. Also, are those controls only accessible to uber projector calibrators or to any ISFer? Are you tempted to give your Ruby a complete shading treatment from wm?
Same black level un-uniformity. But, this one has a huge gamma problem. I'm going to take a picture of it this weekend. One of the light gray steps is stinkin pink! Ughhh. And for the record, I have a third one coming in next week. One of these had better be good.

Perhaps it is a good idea to decide on sending a Ruby to wm for a shading fix. This is if wm tells the world he can do with Rubys what he can do with Qualia 004.

Are you an experienced calibrator? I am wondering since fixing a gray scale is much of what they do. Is the pink uncorrectable?
My guess is it is correctable as it is only a problem at certain gray scale levels. Really weird. I think I see am in my future. I do have some of the gear to do my own calibrations, but not the direct experience.:(

The Lumagen scaler with its 11 point gray/gamma tool would dial this in dead on.
Alan Gouger

You bring good news to ColorChange. If projectors were very good out of the box there would be no calibrators.

ColorChange

I asked about calibration since getting a perfect example will probably never happen. If you have a Ruby with good a good physical property in the convergence, keep it.

1 If the gray scale is off, get it calibrated

2 If the un-uniformity bothers you, get a shading fix

The total cost of 1 and 2 should not be too bad considering what you had to pay for 1080p up until Ruby.

good luck

Pink?? and on one of the light grey steps?? I'd say that the unit isn't very well calibrated? Have you measured the grey scale?? How does 100ire mesure, how about 30ire?

I have an IL1700 but not the correct filters for normal light (I work heavily in the UV).

I think I'll get a proper sensor. Any recommendations? I also have a PhotoResearch SpectraScan 650 for color work.

Tim,

That sounds like calibration to me.
Yea, I have the bulk of the gear but how do I do it? Does anyone have an outline?

Not really. I tried the control I see called "Gamma" for multiple points and haven't found anything that helps this issue at video black.

Maybe. Or they've decided to call it "Gamma" in the factory menu and this is it. I wasn't clear on whether William has access to Ruby in his hands or not to look and see if there is another shading tool besides the one named "Gamma".

The shading outside of video black doesn't look bad to me and I'm not sure that his camera would be accurate enough to shade at about .02 ft-lamberts even if the projector allows it. That is pretty dark for a camera to detect slight differences, but maybe his can.

Has anyone determined if the zoom setting has any effect on the "black frame uniformity" issue?

This sounds like the opposite of hotspotting. "Coldspotting"?

It didn't seem to have any visible effect when I tried it.

Just got mine set up... quick glance at the internal test pattern maybe 1/2 pixel off red... really have to look for it..

By the way, quiet as all get up.. and whoever said it didn't blow hot air... I was up there adjusting the ceiling mount for 30 minute.... could've cooked a turkey for next week :)
Tim,

Mine has similar issues on a gray scale - some bars look ever-so-slightly pinkish.

I feel certain this is a calibration issue, but I also don't have the specific knowledge to attempt to correct it.

Also, I watched some tonight with absolutely no light of any kind in the viewing room for the first time, and the black frame is really pretty darn black. I'm not so sure I would have even noticed the un-uniformity issue if it hadn't been mentioned here. Perhaps mine is dialed in pretty well in this regard - I'm happy as can be with its black.

It looks like its tough to get one that: Has 1 pixel max. misconvergence, has perfect gray scale, has virtually no "bright corners" and has perfect uniformity (bright areas).

As Ohlson stated, I think as long as the physical attributes (convergence, esp.) are OK, the other stuff can be corrected / improved electronically (adjusted out).

If it's only a greyscale bar that looks pinkish, then it does sound like a calibration issue (not unusual for most fixed pixel displays to require calibration). Have you tried the same grey in a full field or windowed test pattern to see if it's the same?

Gary.
Can someone tell me how to get to the internal test pattern on the Ruby and what I can do to adjust the setup as a novice. What is the Gamma disc ?5.2 that they included with the unit? I am waiting for an installer for a ceiling mount. Blacks on Sin City were magnificient. Thanks, Gary
Got my Ruby yesterday. Set it up at the local HT store to compare screens (Firehawk, Studiotek 130, (all they had available)) The owners, calibrators, workers, and anyone that cared to look in were in awe of the picture. Not a negative comment from anyone. Point is, this PJ had none of the issues being reported. Uniformity, greys, misconvergence, etc. were non-issues. The store owners were surprised at how well the PJ performed. The Firehawk was the older 1.35 gain at 127" (Electric). Ran HD, DVD, SD. HD was superb, DVD was also superb after adjusting the Marantz player (didn't note the model), SD was very good. I was surprised at how bright the picture was on the 127" (of course new bulb). PJ was 12' 8" from screen, we sat at 15'. Everyone there favored the Firehawk.

Just a layperson's view, and nothing we haven't already read in the forum. Sorry, but I just had to post the comment :D
