2Wire MediaPortal - WOW!!! I want this NOW!!!

1986 Views 17 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Ken H
This looks to be the holy grail, at least for me -- check out the "media portal" on the 2wire.com website. Unreal -- HD recorder, and media server via home network. Just looks like the greatest thing ever. Anyone know anything about it? I called SBC Yahoo, who sell the 2wire products in my area, and they were clueless...

Holy **** Batman!

That does sound very, very nice! Did I say very nice?

Seems like a pipe dream for US customers... :(

Anyone heard of this puppy?

I brought this one up a week ago, called 2wire and was told by their engineering department it was only a prototype wouldn't be out until sometime later next year. Needless to say I did not bother to ask the price.

It is in concept no different than the VOOM full house solution box but at least VOOM said it will be sometime later this year.
Too bad they are limiting it to DSL. I will never go back from cable to DSL.
Agreed on the Cable to DSL.
Why so down on dsl? Is cable really that much better? My area doesn't have it anyway, but my history w3ith cable companies has always been awful! Tell me more!
Let me tell you; I had 4 DSL installs, every time I moved and once when service was so bad. My speed was on average 384-600, maybe maxing out at 700 kbps. It also went down ALL THE TIME. Very often.

I then switched to Adelphia cable; my speed on 2wire test site is: 4385 kbps. I have had service go down once for 3 hours in the last 4 years.
My first DSL company went out of business. My second was the local phone company and they had the worst customer service ever. I switched to TWC/Roadrunner as soon as it was available in my area and NEVER HAD AN OUTAGE! I have had good success with Mediacom since I moved as well.
Interesting. I have sbc-yahoo and have had no problems. Don't get the speed you are getting, but cable is not an option for me anyway...
DSL stinks mainly because you're usually dealing with a company that has no control over the first hop/physical connection to your house. That's always owned by the local phone company and they're in no hurry to help. If your local phone provider won't sell you DSL (because you're too far for good service), what makes you think a third party provider can provide better DSL service over the same circuit? They can't.

Very, very few outages or problems with Comcast cablemodem over last year plus (and I hate cableTV and sub to D*).
I've had no problems with Bellsouth DSL. And just last month they up'ed my 1.5Mb/s connection to 3Mb/s for only $5 more a month. Though I'll be the first to admit that cable is better if you live too far for a good connection. My brother and his family used to live 3 miles from me and they couldn't get DSL, they had to go cable.
I was going to say from the picture that they have of it that it looks like it isn't even made yet... the weird thing is they claim it is a satellite receiver.. which type? Free to air channels, or could you possibly use it with D*, or E*?

That's the million-dollar question. Looks cool though.
When it becomes available, according to the engineer I spoke to, one can "assume" the box will work with E* or D*.
Hmm..

Well my current feeling about this product is that it is never gonig to come out in its current form, and that it's probably vaporware. Sadly, a company that is stuck on DSL offers it, so they are almost forced to only have a DSL modem inside it, and leave cable out(Which takes a lot of customers away). It just does too much right now, and seems like a company wishfully thinking... now hopefully I'm wrong and something very close to this will come out.
I think it is real. It is an application that they will offer to telco's to allow them to compete with cable. THat's why it does not work with cable!

At least that is what their press information says. I have a 2wire router/modem and it works flawlessly.

funny, I was with telocity dsl, that then in turn became direct tv dsl, who finally went outta buisiness, i then go with the local telco sbc yahoo which was crap, too much fluff fluff just to get to the net, constantly down etc.. i finally went with time warner roadrunner, wow, i can say my pings in all my online games got way better and it was no more lag for me, i can actually enjoy em again, and it amazes me that theres really fast internet, digital cable and hdtv all on that good ol cable thats probably been in this apartment longer than i been alive, wow

anyhow thats why dsl blows

sbc has practially put all the competition outta buisness around here, and then what they do offer is total crap

go cable
