This is exactly what I'm trying to decide. I've been trying to get some advice on how close the rear of the CMT-340 or A2rx speakers can be from the rear wall. I have a media console, where I want to place the speakers, with the front edge 20.5" from rear wall. That would put the rear of the 340's about 10" away. If that is not good, then I would probably go with the A3rx or stands for the 340's. Another question I had is the A3rx just a A2rx made into a tower?

A2rx made into a A3rx - yup, they use all the same drivers.

Whether 10" is far away enough would be for you to decide. It's a pretty good distance for a rear ported speaker. (I pull mine further out when I crank them up to reduce a bit of bass boominess. But most of the time, they're fine closer to the wall for me.) The A3rx comes with port plugs - but you have to ask them for them when you order.

If I got the A3rx, being towers, I could have them 24" from the wall. But I think I'd like the bookshelf speakers sitting on the cabinet. But that seems to be frowned upon around here.

On top of a cabinet or in the cubby hole of a cabinet. The second one isn't best for sound but it you pull it out an inch of the front, that should reduce the side reflections.

If you're looking for the best sound, the towers will be a better option.

I have no cubby, just a straight solid wall. The cabinet is 8 feet long and the speakers would sit, 8 feet apart, in front of the TV by about 8" to 10", or more if I mount the TV on the wall. Also, not sure why the towers, in this case the A3rx's, would give better sound? Aren't they the same speaker as the A2rx, just on a permanent stand?

For a 3.0 system, this is a no-brainer, go for the Arx towers. They are full range speakers, the CMT-340s are not. They will sound a lot more authoritative.I would try to step up to the A5 towers too. If subs were involved, no doubt it would be a much more difficult decision.

In my case, not sure about the OP and don't want to hijack his thread, but I am planning on getting a sub down the road in about 9 months. Trying to understand this, why are the Arx A3rx towers full range speakers and the 340's not? It seems the A3rx are the same as the A2rx.

Nevermind what I said. Looking at them closer, it seems the CMT could actually be tuned lower than the Arx A3s. The Arx look to have a relatively high tuning point for tower speakers, in other words they don't look like they have as much bass as you would expect. I would have expected a speaker of that size to at least reach 40 Hz. I would skip them both and look for a tower speaker that has better bass extension. Klipsch speakers tend to have punchy bass and relatively deep tuning for towers. You might look at some RF-600s or RF-82s. Polk Rti A8s and A9s have pretty good bass for towers, and the prices can be talked down on those.

Bookshelf speakers like the CMT340s do not normally try for frequencies under 50 Hz, and most don't even go that low with authority. They are usually intended to be used with a subwoofer. Tower speakers normally try to dig lower, to nearly cover most of the bass spectrum, by using the larger size of their enclosure for a lower tuning point more. Looking at the +/- 3 dB and -6 dB point on the Arx A3s, they don't look like they have a whole lot of bass extension, in fact it is the same as the Arx A2 speakers, which is strange.

No so-called USA pro reviews - however, people tend to place/rate them with the higher level

type sound signatures.

This is a nice one on the Alexxa bookshelf speakers.

I own the higher-end MB Quart Vera VSO5B bookshelf speakers > and they are some serious

good sounding speakers - clean, refined and transparent, with real good detail, definition and

depth, for both music and home theater with good on-axis and off-axis response >> and they

are dynamic sounding.

Why doesn't the Alexxa line have a center channel? What would you use for a center?

You are starting to come around!

I got to audition MA Silver S 2's & Paradigm Studio 20's today and I prefered the MA's much more as they were more pleasant to my ears. I think they were more accurate, paradigms were brighter and more expensive and not worth the price difference imo.
