3.1 Home Theater Sub Recommendations

745 Views 21 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Demilio
I bought (2) RP-8000f towers for my fronts (bi-amped), and am watching for a deal on the RP-404c to drop in the center (at least until I run out of patience with the DT ProCenter 1000 not matching well). Looking primarily at the SPL-12 or to R-115SW, but open to other recommendations (the latter Klipsch is pushing the budget a bit). The towers have plenty of bass for music listening by themselves, but I can definitely tell I am missing something during some movie sequences. Running on a Pioneer VSX-45 but going to swap that for a VSX-90 I just got as a hand-me-down. Large room that is a kitchen and living and dining room, easily 25'x40' but the seating area is in a corner and about 16'x12'.

A huge room calls for a powerful ported sub (or two). If budget permits, you should consider something like the bang-for-buck champ HSU VTF-3 MK5 HP (currently on sale for $855, shipped) at a bare minimum.

Is this available in Canada? If so where?

Yes, but then you have to deal with shipping, duty, taxes, and exchange rate (which, as you know, isn't very good for us Canadians). $855 USD can easily turn into $1300 CAD. At that price, you might be able to find something equally as good or better from a Canadian source.
Even at $1300/$1400 all in Canadian $$,,,,, i know of nothing in a Canadian retail setting that will come close in performance. The 15" Klipsch is fairly close in many frequencies, but no where near as reliable as the HSU imo.

There's nothing in Canada that can match the HSU VTF-3 MK5's performance even when you factor in exchange/taxes/Duties. The PB2000 is the closest in price(after tax) and the VTF-3 MK5 completely destroys the PB2000. You would need to step up to the PB4000 to get similar(slightly better) performance and that cost $2500CDN + tax

you could always use your own brokerage service which typically only charge a flat $25-$35 brokerage/duty Fee. You basically only have to pay taxes.

I've done that for Both my Outlaw X12's and it saved me nearly $200 vs FedEx services.

OP hasn't mentioned budget yet, afaik, other than saying the R-115SW pushes it a bit, so that $1300-1400 might fall outside of their range.
I don't see the HSU listed on Amazon so I can't really see a price history (CamelCamelCamel). They are on sale from the HSU website for $750 US plus shipping. The R-115SW is $690 US, free shipping through Amazon.

I was really looking at the $500 price point but if a 15" is going to make a huge difference then I could save a couple months, maybe wait and see what deals Black Friday brings. I don't think there are any worthwhile 15" options at $500.

To clarify, I am not interested in shaking my neighbors windows! I just want to fill in the lowest end when watching movies.

I am also dealing with some WAF conflicts; she hates the big RP-8000f towers. That's where the 12" might be a compromise... or downgrade the towers to one of the smaller versions and get a big sub...
Only you and your wife are going to know what will be acceptable in your space for aesthetics and performance. i dont know how close your nearest neighbors are, but if they are within 20feet likely they will hear some bass at decent listening levels even with just your mains. That is a huge space but i remember Tom (PSA) posting that the "whole room" has more effect on the lowest sub frequencies while the higher you go,,,, say above 20/25Hz and up your sub (based on location to the MLP will behave as a good set of mains will and will not be lost or diluted in the rest of the space like the lower frequencies.

If downgrading your mains will give you the budget for a 12/15" sub i would go that rout. In a seating area as small as yours regardless of the rest of the room size the RP bookshelf and a good RP center will be plenty in that seating space. I had RP160's and RP 250C and is was plenty in my space (similar to yours). Then with the saved $$$,,, get a good sub like the HSU 15".

Yes the sub may not be up to the WAF but explain to her its needed,,,,,,, and to compromise honey look,,,, i got the small front speakers;)

Yup, it definitely looks like HSU will ship to Canada.
Unfortunately $1151USD at $1.32 Canadian translates to approx $1519 then Visa takes their 2.5% so theirs another $38, Total= $1557.:(

Yeah, but... $200+ is *steep*... and that's $200 USD, not CAD.

Sacré mèrde. I doubt that saving money on audio gear would cause the Canadians to seek incorporation into the US, but it's a thought.:)

There was a time when our dollar as on par with the USD 12-13 years ago. That was nice.

I would personally have no hesitation getting anything from those ID companies if it didn't involve getting screwed by all of the extra fees, and exchange rate.
To the OP:

If you're still keen on something from one of the ID companies, I did contact Rythmik and got a very reasonable quote from them for an L12 subwoofer. Unfortunately, it still amounted to something more than what I would be willing to spend on a modest 2.1 set up, but it was $400 USD less than what you were quoted from HSU. Even if I am probably going to pass on Rythmik at this time, it would be one company I would heavily consider when I'm in the market to upgrade my HT subwoofer. Or maybe it might just take a bit of liquid courage to pull that trigger... who knows...

I currently have a single pb1000 & am quite happy with it but looking for a little bit more clarity in my sub. Whats your opinion on moving up to a pb2000 or sb3000? I am about 50/50 movies to music. My living room is 12 x 18.
