What the heck, exactly, is 3/2.1?

Despite being a multichchannel buff, I've never known, and google doesn't seem to find much info on the term.

Is it some form of mixing where the two fronts and LFE can be independently experienced if the user only has such a setup? What does the 3 mean?

Thanks!

You must have a Sony player. They are the only company to do that, AFAIK.

I think a lot of companies do that. Denon does.

I thought you wanted to know exactly why, frenchglen. Which I'd like to know, too. I'm curious if true 7.1 soundtracks are displaying "3/4.1". I think the "3" represents the front 3 channels, but I could be wrong.

Yup.

As for the latter point, my Denon AVR does indeed show 7.1 signals as "3/4/.1" in its OSD.

bit of a retarded way to call 5.1

Quite the opposite. It's useful nomenclature. Let's you know, for example, if a 4.1 source was mixed like old Pro Logic (3/1.1) or quad layout (2/2.1). You'd never know by just seeing a 4.1 number. Wish more manufacturers broke it down.
