3:2 pulldown problem?

383 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  d-v-c
Hello,

When wacthing AMC this morning, I noticed that a movie had *lots* of combing when there was vertical and horizontal motion. The combing happened throughout the entire length of the movie. When the next movie was presented on AMC -- no combing at all.

In viewing around some other SD cable channels and watching closely, sometimes combing was present, sometimes not. Some channels did not appear to have any combing issues. Even the HD channel, TNTHD, showing an upconverted, stretched, "Rainman" had the problem but the following movie "Cocktail" did not. Strange.

Have not seen the problem with DVDs viewed at 480i.

Have not seen the problem with NTSC OTA signals.

Conditions:

TV: Samsung LT-P227W

Cable Box: Pace 550HD

Input: Component

Resolution: problem noted with 480i. 480p, 720p, 1080i (except for the TNT issue noted) exhibited no problem.

An issue with 3:2 cadence detection, perhaps? Pace cable box problem (although) I would think the TV's deinterlacer would be responsible for the 3:2 pulldown.

A quick view on a Hitachi 32HDT55 of the problematic AMC movie using a SciAtl 3250HD showed no combing problem.

Anyone with 3:2 pulldown experience?

Best regards,

Paul Bigelow

The only time I've ever used 3:2 pulldown was with a sony 40in CRT and it did introduce combing. Very annoying, so I had to stop using it.
Update: Have seen the combing via 480i DVD. Put in the "Gimme Some Truth" John Lennon documentary and played via 480i --> combing galore.

Several years ago I had the same problems with many TWC channels. This occurs when the field order gets reversed -- either when being MPEG2 encoded or after encoding in your box. I still see it very occassionally.

TWC finally fixed the problem.
