How can I tell I'm looking at a 3-chip DLP if I am looking at the specifications of the projector? Also, how much do they generally cost?

If its a 1024 or 1280 chip resolution it will cost $30k and up.

You can find used 800x600 resolution 3 chips for $3k and up.

Every once in a while I have to do a reality check, and posts like this help to put everything in perspective.

I've been driving a $6000 car for three years now, and listening to $12000 speakers for about the same amount of time.

Its easy to lose sight of things . . . .

More perspective:

I went to infocomm when the pre-production, first 3 chip DLP, VistaPro from electrohome was shown. I was blown away by brightness and color and ordered one the next week for a home theater install.

We waited 6 weeks for it then put it in.

I think I may be able to claim to be the first person in the world to use DLP in a home theater.

This is the unit we are seeing available used for $3k and up. I just ordered its first replacement bulb - $995 list.

It cost about $60K when it was new!!

Sounds like a deal if you can live with $1200 / 1000 hour bulbs...

Actually the bulb is $1495 / 1000 hr.

I specified and installed it for a client. He was fortunate to sell his family business for over 100 million.

Ironically, the fan noise was no problem since his icemaker was in the room too!

With a hundred large, you couldn't build him a hushbox?

You should have just installed a freezer walk-in in the back of the theater, and had the DLP FPTV shine through the glass.

That way the projector would stay cool and both the FPTV and ice maker would be silent, plus you could keep boxes of ice cream Bon-Bons, It's-its, and fudge-cicles handy too.
