3 Components 2 Digital Inputs...

969 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  afrogt
So I have a budget theater in a box set up. The problem I am running into is my receiver has 2 HDMI inputs as well as 2 Digital Audio inputs. I am trying to find a way to connect my 360, Ps3, and Direct TV through my receiver. The only way I can run Audio for my Direct tv through my receiver is via digital audio. I can't get HDMI audio to work through my receiver. I also have the Ps3 and Direct tv going HDMI through the receiver for the video.

So do I need a receiver with three digital audio inputs? I have been searching but seems that only the really high quality receivers have this option. I really dont want to switch fiber between my xbox and ps3 every time I want to play one of them. Any help would be appreciated.

Get a digital audio switch.
Does your TV have two HDMI inputs? If so, consider this connection strategy:

1. Directv:

a. DIRECTV_HDMI_OUT to TV_HDMI_IN_1

b. DIRECTV_OPTICAL_OUT to RECEIVER_OPTICAL_IN_1

2. Xbox360:

a. XBOX_HDMI_OUT to RECEIVER_HDMI_IN_1

b. RECEIVER_HDMI_OUT to TV_HDMI_IN_2

3. PS3:

a. PS3_HDMI_OUT to RECEIVER_HDMI_IN_2

(b. same as for Xbox360 ... RECEIVER_HDMI_OUT to TV_HDMI_IN_2)

It seems like you can have everything connected this way. You will need to switch the input on the TV when you change from "Directv" to "PS3 or Xbox360" mode.

The tv I have now only has one, so that is connected to the HDMI out on the receiver. Friday though my new tv will be here and it will have 3.
Hi birish21, may I ask what model HTIB you have? And is the Xbox 360 older model without HDMI?

I have a Yamaha HRT-6130 Receiver

And the Xbox is an older one with the component cables.

Does your Directv cable box not have Digital coaxial audio output?

You have three digital audio inputs. Two Optical and one Coax (the orange RCA connector) One of your three sources should have a Coax Digital Out. if not, then time for an AVR Upgrade i'm afraid.
See I think the real problem is my direct tv and ps3 are fine with the digital audio going through the receiver. But when I use the rca connections for the xbox I cant get surround sound unless I use digital audio. So now I have to keep switching my cables from the PS3 to the Xbox
Actually just switched my component cables from multichannel to CD and now I can get the 5.1 effect. Problem solved and no more cable switching. Thanks for the ideas to get my head thinking straight.

Did you get a chance to see if Directv box has Digital Coaxial Audio Out?

This may solve your cabling issue but using RCA (red & white) connections is not true (Dolby Digital 5.1) surround sound from your Xbox 360.
Monoprice sells a combo cable that lets the Xbox, PS2/PS3, and a Wii share a set of component-in's.

You're not supposed to plug it into more than one console at a time though. Won't hurt anything, but won't necessarily work right. I have it hooked to a PS2 and Wii, and found that when the PS2 was connected (but off) the Wii would not send audio correctly.

Otherwise, works nicely if you need to use a single set of inputs.
Most DirecTV HD boxes have digital coaxial and optical outputs. You should use the digital coax from the Sat box to your receiver and free up the optical inputs for the Xbox and PS3.
