Its not on a TotalHD flipper, hurray I can buy it after all!!! Its a BD50!!!

And Dolby TrueHD is just fine for the soundtrack, lets hope we don't get stuck with an inferior bitrate HD-DVD encode.

Come on Warner optimize for the superior Blu-ray spec!

This disc will sell much better for Warner on Blu-ray than it does on HD-DVD.
(feel free to quote me on that)

Well, all that probably means is that it's the same encode copied over from HD-DVD. At least we're not losing anything anymore by them going down to BD25s.

Now it would be nice for them to optimize for the extra 20Gb of empty space on the disc.

Wow... took exactly 1 minute after the posting of this announcement before the bashing of the other format begins. Nice.

Sweet, I'm so glad this isnt going to be on a TotalHD disc and Warner is putting it on a BD50 now lets just see if they take advantage of it.
Yawn.

Still encoded to the lowest common denominator.

Warner should follow Paramount's example ala Flags of our Fathers and encode to each format's specs.

Well, this is the Blu-Ray forum. Last time I checked, what he said adheres to the forum's rules.

It's not like he insulted your momma. Or did he?

If you are so offended, report him to the moderators or just put him on your ignore list. I too wish warner would do what Paramount does and optimize per spec. We are getting hand-me-downs.

Even though the optimized discs Paramount puts out look nearly if not identical to these "hand me down" encodes.

I agree that Warner should make the best of each format's specs, but as long as the movie is properly encoded, hopefully it shouldn't be a problem. 300 looks like a really tricky movie to encode, though.

It's also unfortunate that we're getting shafted again in the IME department, even though IME-identical features have been done on Lionsgate releases like The Decent and Crank. I really can't see why Warner can't put in the extra effort to just include another encode, especially since they've got 20 extra gigs to play with.

I'm going Blu with this one...I'm done picking different flavors.
So is there any idea on when Warner Bros. will "flip the switch" and release new HD DVD and Blu-ray discs with identical features? I understand that currently no BR player exists that could play the interactive stuff, but what's to stop them from putting the feature on the disc in anticipation of player/firmware upgrades the way fox did with lossless audio?

Sure, a video box of the commentary and a trivia game aren't worth losing any sleep over, but it will be an annoying trend with Warner Bros. releases for the foreseeable future.
the PIP commentary is sad bluray doesnt get it, Bluray is loosing all the next Gen type of Special features. Just like MI3 the HD-DVD got the video commentary and bluray didnt, this seeing both made a big difference in how much I was entrainment value alot more fun watching.
I cannot believe that you guys think the bitrate would be so much higher if it was encoded for BD actually if they encoded for BD you would probably get an inferior encode to hd-dvd cause they would save some money and go the route of the BD-25 so be thankful you are getting the hd-dvd encode hell be thankful you are getting warner at all they were previously hd-dvd exclusive

I also enjoy "seeing both made a big difference in how much I was entrainment value alot more fun watching"

Thanks for the contribution!

It is a fact that Warner titles would look better if they used the entire BD50 and went with higher bitrates. This movie will be great on Blu-ray, but it could be better if it was optomized for the format. Once HD DVD dies off, Warner will optomize for Blu, and I am sure high bitrate VC-1 encodes will look outstanding. Just as high bitrate AVC and MPEG2 have looked great.

Testing. If they cannot test those features on multiple players and be 100% sure they are going to work in the future (on future players), then it is pointless to 1.)produce said features and/or 2.)delay what will be a huge day & date release.

THANK YOU WARNER!

This movie is awesome, but I would NOT buy it if they gimped the audio.
BD-50 and TrueHD. I think Warner is finally redeeming themselves ! Why can't they just make this the norm for Blu-ray ? Then, when a nice blockbuster comes out, they go the extra mile like disney did for Pirates.

Now we just need fox to pick up a few pointers from Disney

NIN

Do a search, the producers have said the higher bitrate allowed for a few scenes to be better on Blu-ray.

Otherwise, the higher bitrate movies have looked better than lower bitrate movies on average regardless of Codec. Check out the tier thread, and see Crank, PRestige, Casino Royale.

HD DVD is a gimped format as far as bitrates. This does matter for picture quality. Whenever a Blu-ray disc has the same encode as the HD DVD, it could be done with more space and an higher bitrate and look better.

Your right...POTC is in MPEG4-AVC...at a very hi bitrate of close to 40MB/s and is supposely the best HD video so far...

Its only a matter of time before everything is encoded like POTC...
