$300ish pre/pro/amp receiver suggestions?

515 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  sojodave
My buddy asked me to select a home theater receiver for him with a budget of $300. I'm really not familiar with anything in this price range, but some froogling turned up a few units and I'm wondering if anyone has any opinion on them or alternative suggestions.

These can be had for around $300 with shipping and I know both companies used to have decent reputations in the home theater arena, I assume they still do.

Yamaha RX-V559

Denon AVR-1906

There's also the Sony str-dg800 which appears to have more bells and whistles (HDMI passthrough for example). I've never been a fan of Sony though, but perhaps they've improved their sound quality.

Any thoughts on these choices or alternate better suggestions (staying at $300 shipped and not wandering into the $350 and up arena). Thanks!

I think either the V559 or the 1906 would work equally as well and are solid products.

I recently got a Pioneer VSX-816 and am quite happy with it. It has a lot of inputs (3 optical and 2 coax) but only component video (3 in, one out). It's 110 watts per channel and supports 7.1 speakers.
Take a look at the Yamaha HTR5940. 105 watts per channel and Ipod ready.

Negative..Yamaha 5940 is XM Ready but not IPod Ready...
The 5940 has a portable jack on the front to connect directly from your Ipod and it has a filtering mode that corrects mp3 sound.
