ok

i admit i don't have a lot of patience for tweaking, first of all

but i bought the dvd on the recommendation of pretty much everyone, and i'm kind of lost. i went through the basic calibration stuff, and that's cool. then there are a million other tests and patterns that they don't walk you through. can anyone give me some pointers on which are the critical patterns to work with?

i'm thinking specifically of the geometry/convergence ones... what do i do with those? i presume the relevant stuff needs to be accessed via the service menu so i really don't want to mess anything up...

anyway, thanks a bunch for any info!

I didn't mess with those.

I just did the five basic tests:

Contrast

Brightness

Sharpness

Color and Hue

And my TV (I also own a Toshiba 34HDX82) looks great!

You use the geometry and overscan patterns including the widescreen versions to adjust with the service menu. It takes a couple hours but its worth it. You have to do it separately for each of the TW modes. HD mode needs to be adjusted separately but you can't use the DVD for that so its tough. There is help info on each of the advanced test patterns, just move to the help icon to bring up the help text for each.
