Hello.

First post here.

I am new to HDTV so please bear with me as I try to convey my problem to you.

I recently acquired a SONY 34XBR910 and I am experiencing

vertical lines that scroll from right to left. It seems to be made up of horizontal lines that "step down" one line approx. every inch. These horizontal "steps" are layered one upon the other so as to produce a perfectly vertical stack of "steps" that scroll across the screen. Has anyone seen something like this before? ( see pics.)

(It is not like the problem I read about here with the wide 3" or 4" vertical faint white bands some XBR800's, 510's and 910's have had).

These tend to be noticeable on dark solid color backgrounds, especially red.

You can see these lines in the picture below in the pink hat.

The signal you see in the pictures is an analog signal not HD. (HDTV will be installed next week.)

The cable provider in my area, Allentown PA, is RCN.

All hookups are via component cables.

There are no lines when watching DVD movies.

The previous owner had the set calibrated by Eliab Alvarez de la Campa of Avical.

I am hoping that someone here has experienced this before, and could point me in the right direction towards a solution.

(Or explain what it is, or what is causing it).

Thank you

And one more for your discerning eyes.

This is probably the best one that shows what I am trying to describe. You can clearly see the "squiggles" stacked upon one another.

These vertical stacks of "squiggles" march from the right side of the screen to the left in endless procession. If there is not a dark solid color, then they are nearly invisible.

Perhaps what you're seeing might be a ground loop problem. It's just a hypothesis though... here's why I suggested it:

I own an Arcam AV receiver, and until recently, every time I turned it on, I would see patterns like that on my very old television, one that needed an RF modulator between it and the DVD player's video output. I installed a better wall outlet and even "auditioned" 2 power conditioners, but none of that had any effect. Then I bought Sony's 34XS955, only to see the same problem even without the RF modulator.

I therefore hired an electrician to install a completely separate circuit, into which I now plug the receiver. Problem fixed.

I realize my difficulties were different from the one you're describing, but if you haven't done so already, you should at the very least try to eliminate each of your electrical components as the culprit. The "problem component" might only cause visible distortion on your television with analog television frequencies, while leaving your DVD signals unaffected.

Definitely inference from something. I don't think it's electrical interference because you say your DVD’s look fine. But I suppose it could still be electrical.

I’m not sure what to suggest here. Have you checked your cables? Maybe even try hooking your cable box up via composite or coax cable and see if it still does it.

I have started to try and eliminate things.

All new good quality cables, distanced away from power sources.

I disconnected everything from the TV and ran a direct cable from where

the cable enters the house, to the TV.

Turned the power off to the computer or anything else in the house connected to cable. (Cable modem and wireless router).

I have a power conditioner on the way, as well as a motorola signal

booster.

I have a 32 inch SONY, (not HD), which does not exhibit any symptoms while it is connected to the same source, in the same location.

Thought I would update this thread.

I just got some HDTV channels and had a cable box installed.

The picture is absolutely perfect...no lines.

That goes for the HDTV channels as well as the analog channels.

I have the signal to the set hooked up via DVI.

The cable box is a Motorola Model # DCT6200/1000.

If I hook the signal to the TV either through UVF or composite, I get the lines.

If I hook it up through DVI or component cables...perfect picture.

Now, if I can only figure out to to get the dual split screen back.

TbirdDriver, thanks for the followup post. Sounds like the TV has some poor internal shielding that allows this problem to be displayed when the cable is connected directly. Using the DVI connection with your cable box obviously bypasses that internal interference. Glad to see it's solved!

Sounds like it was an "ingress" problem. This is where the cable line acts as an antenna and RF signals leak in where the shielding is weak. Your pictures are typical of pager or similar interference. A digital signal source should be highly immune to such problems, which is probably why DVI looks OK.

That is because this signal is weaker than the other inputs and requires boosting within the Sony 910 chassis. What you are seeing are the noisy harmonics from your horizontal deflections circuit (operating at about 30 kilohertz) leaching back into your input circuits. I would activate the bypass patch as is often done to treat cases where the 'B' board picks up only the base frequency from the same deflection circuit (cure for single scrolling vertical bar).

Is activating the "bypass patch ", something I could do, or would this require a service call?

If it is not too difficult, would you have a walk through procedure for the 34XBR910?

Thank you
