I have some questions about the 360 upconversion.

Does the 360 upconvert any type of DVD's to 720p or 1080i over component?

I think the answer is no (most searches were for 1080p which was a definite no- gotta go VGA).

The reason I ask is a friend (or better, acquaintance) of mine told me that the 360 will upconvert non-copy protected/copywritten DVD's, but normal copyright DVD's will not upconvert over Component. He also says (this is where I roll my eyes) that he makes a back-up of all his DVD's, which removes the copyright and then the 360 will upconvert it to 720p.

OK- now does anyone know if this is true? Even if it is, I would think most copy/backup software compresses the video so badly that any upconversion would be pointless. Then again, what do I know? That's why I'm bringing it to the experts.

Your friend is blowing smoke. Do you notice your screen flicker when you play dvd's using component? That is the xbox changing the output resolution to 480p. The only way to get around this is by using the VGA, this topic is not open for discussion. These are facts, message will self destruct in 5..4..3..2..1

I have backup DVDs and the quality of all is excellent.

As for the upconversion; no, the 360 won't do it unless it's over VGA cables.

What complicates and confuses the issue is that most quality TVs upscale 480i inputs nicely.

A friend of mine ran side-by-side comparisons of the same movie on his old 480i DVD player with my standalone upscaling player on his Sony SXRD and saw no significant differences. Considering the Sony has 20 separate features devoted to making SD look tolerable, this is not a total surprise.

Your friend might be confusing the TV's onboard processing of the 360's 480p DVD output with 360 upscaling.

Or maybe its just a placebo effect. ;-)
