This is with reference to Denon DVD-3910/2910 setup (those having 2900/5900 might also know it) and relates to the SCAD/DVD-A bass management:

1. What's the difference between (a) Source Direct: ON and (b) Source Direct: OFF, and all speakers set to: LARGE for DVD-A playback? I guess for SACD, (b) will convert DSD to PCM even if speakers are set to LARGE (???).

2. Suppose I set Source Direct to ON. Often SACD/DVD-A's .1 track is not LFE but a full bandwidth track. How does "Subwoofer Boost: +10dB" setting of the speaker volume setup menu resolve bass (or it just doesn't)?

Thank you.

1. Source Direct On bypasses the bass management portion of the player. This means all the speakers are set to Large and the sub is only used if the software has dedicated info for it.

As for converting DSD to PCM, the 3910 does when you use bass management. So if you are in Source Direct ON, it doesn't. If you are in OFF and have the speakers set to small, it does.

2. The Subwoofer Boost issue is a filter that Denon included because some of the old DTS tracks had a 10 db boost in the LFE track. This made it hard to calibrate the sub properly for DVD and SA-CD playback. Some people need that boost switch to get the right levels.

Has anyone looked at the sub output level of the 2910 and 3910 to check if it matches all across for analog out for DD, DTS, SACD, and DVD-A?

But I gather that there is now a parameter for this if it doesn't? Is that parameter by format? I.e., can you set it separately for DVD-A and not for SACD? Or is it global?

Kevin:

Here's what I have come to conclude:

The +10dB subwoofer boost parameter is global for DVD-A and SACD. It doesn't apply to coaxial digital output; but will apply to DD, DTS via analog out. In other words, it is not selective per se by format; but applies to all formats output from analog out. Also, this boost is +10dB maximum and you can specify it less. For example, I have set it up to +6dB level (while all other channel levels are 0dB).

The channel levels and the speaker time delay compensation come into picture even if Source Direct is set to ON. Only the speaker size setup and crossover settings (in 3910) will be bypassed with Source Direct set to ON. There's no explicit crossover setting in 2910 because it's preset at 80Hz as per Denon website.

Those (like me) who have AVR-3805 receiver, can provide upto an additional +15dB boost if needed for subwoofer for Ext In.
