i just a got a sony 3d tv, it is synced with a sony str-dg820, & ps3. While trying to play certain games, the receiver sends the 3d signal through fine (ie gran turismo), but with other game(ie the fight, pain) it needs to be connected directly to the tv, why?

It's highly technical, but some 3D is in Frame packed mode. This puts the audio in a different place in the signal. Your AVR cannot play that audio, as it doesn't know where to look for it. Newer (2010) AVRs that are designed for 3D can read the signal.
