Intro:

I made this spreadsheet as a tool to help me sort out what 3D games and blu-rays are worth purchasing. There are very few professional-style reviews out there, but I have done my best to compile them into one Exel file.

If you know of another source for technical 3D reviews that could be added, please let me know. Or if you want to add relevant info to this and re-post it, feel free to do so.

Enjoy! Feedback is welcome. Hopefully, others find this useful too.

----------------------------------------------
Notes:

The Metacritic, RottenTomatoes, and Blu-ray Movie review scores do not consider the quality of 3D used in the game/film. They only consider the overall quality of the game/film in 2D mode.

The columns colored in the darker blue are technical review scores for the game/film's 3D video presentation only.

I wanted to have two separate kinds of scores like this because I'm mainly interested in purchasing 3D games and movies that are not only great games/movies, but also implement the 3D aspect very well.

S3D = filmed in Stereoscopic 3D

S3DR = computer-generated Stereoscopic 3D Render

2D-3D = 2D converted to 3D

I used reviews from Movemodo.com to determine if PlayStation Move controls added anything to the game.

In the Move column, Green color means the Move controls improve the game, and the full game can be played with Move controls in 3D (as far as I know). Teal color means that either the Move controls add very little to the game, don't work well, or the full game can't be played with Move controls in 3D.

I also added a couple of preliminary Metacritic scores to upcoming 3D games, colored in black because they are subject to change when more critics post their scores.

11/10/11 Update:

Movies and games can now be sorted numerically by 3D release date, aspect ratio, overall 3D quality, film/game score, overall score (film/game + 3D), and to a limited extent, pop-out 3D and 3D depth. The movie rankings are more accurate, simply because there are many more 3D blu-ray critic reviews available.

I also added most upcoming 3D PS3 games and 3D theatrical releases with a rough estimate blu-ray disc release date for each.

No thanks. It works better if you view it in Microsoft Exel. I spent a lot of time color-coding everything.

It appears that the embedded format has cut off some columns. I'm using an iPad and it displays the zip in Goodreader just fine. The iPad loves to choke on things that Steve thinks I shouldn't need to see, but to my amazement displayed this file.

Thanks for the information!

It's such a damn shame that the PS3 (or XBox 360) really doesn't have the processing power to run the most graphically impressive games in 3D without more or less severe visual trade-offs or terrible below 30 framerates.

I constantly see people on gaming forum saying that "we don't need a new console generation yet". Clearly they don't own 3D TVs - otherwise they would be joining the rest of us begging for new consoles

I noticed this too when reading some of the technical reviews by Digital Foundry at Eurogamer. Nearly every game takes major resolution and/or frame rate drops in 3D mode. Some 3D modes, like Enslaved's, are so terrible that they make the game unplayable.

Games like Socom 4 and Crysis 2 even use a pseudo-3D mode to reproject the same image twice instead of rendering two different images just so they can maintain decent performance. Gran Turismo 5 seems to be the lone exception of a full retail game with non-cartoon graphics that runs in regular 3D at 720p with good performance.

Despite the drop to 720p and 30 fps, WipEout HD Fury also does a good job at still looking great and feeling perfectly playable.

But aside from those - and some less graphically demanding games from the PSN store - most of my experiments with 3D games on the PS3 have been disappointing, several times to the point where I turned it off because I simply couldn't live with the framerate drops or visual cutbacks.

I hope Uncharted 3 can manage to pull it off without too many problems. Aside from some ugly crosstalk in a few places, the multiplayer beta was okay in 3D. Whatever cut they had made seemed to be to the visuals rather than the framerate, and that's definitely the better choice in my opinion. I simply can't stomach those framerates in the low to mid 20s. Quite literally in fact - they make me queasy.

Which games disappointed you?

I own WipEout HD Fury, Super Stardust HD, MotorStorm: 3D Rift, and Avatar: The Game, which is coming in the mail. U3, GT5, and MotorStorm: Apocalypse are at the top of my wishlist.

I've had limited time with WipEout in 3D, but Super Stardust looked and played good with no real issues. The added 3D depth and explosion particles were nice, but the asteroids-style gameplay gets boring pretty quickly for me. I spent a several hours going for a couple of its DLC trophies yesterday and had no ill effects (besides failure and frustration). Technically, SSHD has the best 3D quality of any game out there because it does full 720p at 60fps for each eye. But really, the game is missing a fun factor for me, and the 3D does nothing to WOW! you.

I thought MotorStorm: 3D Rift was the most fun because it used the 3D effects much better than the other two. I love how it slings mud and smoke at your face, and going off massive jumps in 3D is way cool. The sense of depth and speed is great. The resolution dips when there is a lot of things on-screen at once, but I don't notice it too much when I am really into the race. Every once in a while though, I will crash into a wall, the camera will zoom in on it too far, and the entire 3D wall will pop out of my screen for a few seconds, which is pretty off-putting.

I also experienced my first bout of 3D queasiness after racing on one of MotorStorm's darker-colored tracks for 20–30 minutes. But until then, I had no issues and had played it a couple times for 1.5–2 hour sessions. Its a pretty shallow experience, but I would still recommend it as a fun $10 demo-style game.

Killzone 3 was probably the biggest disappointment, with a huge drop in visual quality. I've been meaning to give it another look though, to see if I was perhaps too quick to brush it off completely.

Avatar: The Game (which doesn't run in the usual frame sequential mode of the newer 3D games, so I chose SBS mode instead) was so framerate crippled in 3D that I actually resorted to switch to 2D mode and use the 2D-3D conversion on my TV instead (which did a remarkably good job on depth, although I didn't get the "floating" front layer with my character and interface as with native 3D).

Tron Evolution was okay, but it also had too many very obvious framerate drops for my taste.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (the recently released HD remake) also suffers from a very sketchy framerate in 3D.

However, I have certainly also had some positive 3D game experiences - like GT5 (I haven't been able to dial out some nasty crosstalk in the cockpit view without losing too much depth, but otherwise it's great), WipEout HD, deBlob 2 (didn't really care for the game though, so I traded it in quickly), MotorStorm: Apocalypse (arguably the most impressive 3D game at this time) plus some of the less graphically intensive games from the PSN store that I would obviously expect to run well in 3D, eg. SSHD, Hustle Kings etc.

I've played a bit of Crysis 2 as well, and it also runs well, but the reprojection 3D means it's somewhat less impressive than proper stereoscopic 3D.

Can someone elaborate on the terms S3D and S3DR for me. And i hadn't read most of these reviews and i'm surprised by some. Resident Evil Afterlife getting such low ratings? that movie is just amazing on my 3d tele , just as good if not better than cloudy (the other sony transfer i own). Actually i would rate it better. The last fight with albert wesker was jaw dropping with the 3d effects. Also, rotten tomatoes giving yogi bear a 14? What were they smoking when they reviewed it? That movie's amazing on the 3d. Thankfully avs gives it a 90. And Legend of the guardians: owls of ga hoole is an underrated gem which most people don't know/talk about. Also dont agree with certain other scores like despicable me. I'd rate it 95+ ,simply brilliant, my favorite 3d animation movie. And how coraline got rated that high, i thought it was crap. But i guess in the end, the tastes of the individual who's reviewing it can differ.

Are the scores listed here for the movies overall scores, or are they specific scores for the 3D aspect? If it's the former (which I suspect, at least for some of the ones listed, and it's definitely the case with the Metacritic scores for games) they obviously don't necessarily tell much of anything about how impressive the 3D is.

(Edit: Nevermind, this was explained in the very post, which I obviously didn't read carefully enough
.)

Out of the 3D movies I've seen Resident Evil: Afterlife is still my favourite live action movie in terms of 3D (beating even Avatar), and Legend of the Guardians the most impressive animated movie (but I've only seen samples of others, although I started watching Despicable Me last night, which also looks quite impressive).

Okay, I've updated the original post with a new column that includes PlayStation Move support for the games. I used reviews from Movemodo.com to determine if the Move controls added anything to the game.

Green color means the Move controls improve the game, and the full game can be played with Move controls in 3D (as far as I know). Teal color means that either the Move controls add very little to the game, don't work well, or the full game can't be played with Move controls in 3D.

I also added a couple of preliminary Metacritic scores to upcoming 3D games, colored in black because they are subject to change when more critics post their scores.

S3D = Shot in 3D

S3DR = Animated/CG 3D Render

2D-3D = 2D converted to 3D

The Metacritic, Rottentomatoes, and Blu-ray Movie review scores do not consider the quality of 3D used in the film/game. They only consider the overall quality of the film/game in 2D mode.

The columns colored in blue are technical review scores for the film/game's quality of 3D. Sometimes reviewers labelled these scores as "3D presentation" or "video quality."

I wanted to have two separate kinds of scores like this because I'm mainly interested in purchasing 3D games and movies that are both great games/movies and implement the 3D aspect very well.
