i'm in the market for a 55'' 3D LED TV from either Sony or Samsung, but heard people around me mention the 2D pictures on 3D capable TVs are not as crisp as the regular 2D HD TV. is this true?

No, not true at all. In fact, the opposite is true. 3D tv's have better video processing and panels, and have great 2d performance because of it.

Maybe in one or two special cases / models. But the above is correct. Everything that makes a good 3D display generally makes for a better 2D display as well.

I had heard that passive systems may not be as sharp in 2D as others but I have not seen this verified.

This sounds ridiculous. My Samsung 55' 3D LED has the best 2D picture I have ever seen. Others will argue but it is certainly not inferior to a non-3D tv.

newbie question, passive 3D is the one without the glasses, or the other way around.
