3rd HDMI - Important? - Less then $1000?

1029 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  sjp777
I'm trying to decide how important a 3rd HDMI input is. I was all set to buy my first receiver, Yamaha RX-V661 but then started thinking I might want a 3rd HDMI input. The least expensive 3 HDMI input I have found was the Pioneer VSX-82TX.

Two questions:

1) How important is the 3rd HDMI input? (1-Cable, 2-HD disc, 3-Video game???)

2)Any suggestions on another 3 HDMI input receiver in the same ~$1,000 price range?

4 HDMI AVR.. Marantz SR7001. rigth at a grand, maybe less with prudent googling.
Both Onkyo 705 and 805 are under a grand with 3 HDMI inputs.
I've got DirecTV HD taking one, HD-DVD taking one and Blu-Ray taking one. If I ever upgrade my Xbox 360 to the Elite or get a PS3 that would be four HDMI inputs needed or five if I got both game systems.
The Sony STR-DG810 has the third input, and it is quite tempting at just over $300.

You could always pick up a Zektor MAS7.1 switcher -- that's remote-controlled 3 into 1 switcher that's pretty well regarded, I believe.

By just over $300 do you mean $399 because that is the cheapest I've seen it?

Have you seen it cheaper somewhere?
I'm not sure about the rules of posting prices on this site, but I have just purchased one from Amazon for three-o-nine with free shipping. It should arrive at my house on Monday.

At that price, your money would be better spent toward the receiver.

Perhaps. On the other hand, it'd free one up to choose a receiver based on its sound qualities instead of connectivity. Also, there are cheaper versions of HDMI switchers, too -- I think Monoprice carries some, for example.
