I know this is a crazy off the wall question, but is it possible to replace the video electronics board for a 4:3 monitor with one for a 16:9 monitor? I'd like to get a 16:9 monitor, but finances prevent it at this time. It would be much cheaper to just replace the board (compatibility issues?) and mask the screen from the inside (to prevent light spill into the area above and below the 16:9 image). This would give side black bars for 4:3, but a 16:9 image would be the priority.

Anyone care to comment? Please explain "why" if the answer is "no". If "yes" to the possibility, what obstacles will be presented? The set in question is a 1994 4:3 Sony 53XBR35. Maybe it is crazy, but I'm just trying to be imaginative...

Even if you could do it, what would the benefit be? Widescreen material would look pretty much the same as before, while 4:3 images would be significantly smaller.
