4:3 VS 16x9 LCD Screendoor question

Hi all -

I have a question reguarding the screendoor difference btween viewing a DVD from a PC on a 4:3 Panel vs a 16X9 panel.

I am currently using a 4:3 800X600 projector to project a 100" 16X9 image. The screendoor is there but to me not that noticable. However it does drive some of my friends crazy. So I am thinking that I should upgrade to a projector that has a 16X9 ratio panel.

Here is my question. Using a percent how much would the screendoor be reduced on a 16X9 image using a 16X9 panel vs a 4:3 panel? Feel free to include differences between the various wide resolutions as well.

Thanks for reading!!

For starters, with your 800x600 PJ you are only using 800x450 of your panels in a 16x9 setup. 800x450=360,000 total pixels.

For comparision, take a 16:9 Panny L300U with 960 x 540 panels. Here you can use the full panel for your 16:9 screen and get 518,400 pixels, a 44% increase. More pixels on the screen means less screen door for the same size screen. (the Panny may also have some LCD construction additional features that minimize screen door.)

You will also get a boost in the lum light output as well since you will be able to use all the pixels to lightup your screen instead of displaying black bars on the top and bottom.

Another itemis fill factor. This is the actual size if you will of the pixel within the displayed image. The better the fill factor the less screen door is an issue. LCD technology tends to have the lowest (worst) fill factor followed by LCD with MLA, followed by DLP.
Ah ok that makes sense. I was looking at it the wrong way in my mind. Even though I am using a constant height screen I will still get many more pixels per screen area then with my current projector.

Thanks for the reply,

Jeff
