I have broken down my new receiver decision to:
  • Onkyo 606
  • Pioneer 1018
  • Harman Kardon 254

I am willing to buy used or refurbished but I am in Canada so the choices are tougher to find suppliers. Does anyone recommend where I should buy from in Calgary, AB?

I will be connecting:
  • Sony BDP-S350 (Blu-Ray) (HDMI or component+SPDIF)
  • Motorola DCT-6412 (HD-PVR) (HDMI or component+SPDIF)
  • Xbox 360 (HDMI or component+optical)
  • HTPC (DVI>HDMI+SPDIF/5.1 analog or component+SPDIF/5.1 analog)
  • Hitachi 55VG825 (720p LCD projection HDTV) (HDMI)

Should I make everything easy and get the Onkyo because of the 4 HDMI inputs or does it even matter if I am able to use component in with enough SPDIF inputs and have the receiver convert it to HDMI?

Right now the HTPC has to use SPDIF or analog 5.1 but that will change when I upgrade it to a HDMI motherboard.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have the 606 and absolutely love it.

Some people with it seem to have a problem with the sound but mine is working great.

Having 4 HDMI in is what I needed plus the price was really good.

Reading a couple threads on www.digitalhome.ca shows that some people have problems with HDMI but it seems to specific to the 6416 while I have a Comcast-branded 6412 that I bought off ebay. It has been working for quite a while with HDMI already. Hopefully it isn't an issue but if it is I would need to rely on the receiver transcoding component to HDMI if I am forced to use it.
