Now that I have your attention.....
After an exhaustive search for a new AV receiver to replace my 1998 Yamaha R-V1105, I finally pulled the trigger. The candidates were:
Denon 3805- Nice sound, loaded with features, but that remote just felt cheap, and the sound was not the best I heard in my audition.
Yamaha RX-V2400- I didn't care for the sound from this unit. I felt it was a little muddy and not warm enough for my ears. Great features and DSP, though.
Pioneer VSX 54TX- A beautiful looking unit, but the sound was too agressive for my ears. If I would've just been in the market for pure HT, this would've been my choice.
Harman Kardon 630- Loved the warm, lush sounds coming from this receiver. Alas, no video transcoding or "upconversion" dropped this off my potential list.
NAD 753- Beautifully truthful, realistic sounding unit with good looks and adaquate features. This was a close second in the final analysis.
Marantz SR7400- The winner. I just loved the warm yet very detailed sound coming from the Marantz. Had all the features and power I need for my HT, and the elegant and very functional learning remote sealed the deal for me.
I bought the Marantz from my local dealer, who was nice enough to allow me to bring the SR7400 back and upgrade(for a nominal fee) to the SR7500 when that comes available.
I picked up a SPL meter from Radio Shack on the way home, and had the SR7400 all cabled and setup in under an hour. Was super easy with the SPL meter.
The performance? In a word....stunning! I can't believe the difference between my old Yamaha and the Marantz. It is so much more musical than the Yamaha, and the quality of the surround sound was miles ahead.
It took awhile, but I feel that I ended up with the right receiver for my circumstances. I got a beautifully musical and powerful receiver that can do music and HT equally well, for under $1000.
And if I feel that I want to upgrade when the SR7500 comes out, I'm already pre-approved by my dealer to make a swap.
