40' Run for Coaxial Cable? Is it Possible?

3302 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  whoaru99
Hi, a buddy just got a 50" Pioneer pro115hd plasma HD TV. The TV will be located about 40' feet from the comcast hd cable entry point into the house. Is that run too long for quad shielded coax cable? What is the maximum length for a coax cable run?

Thanks,

Tom

Also can we run CAT5e forty feet or longer?
As long as the signal is strong enough 40' will not be a problem.

Are there any splits in the run?

What are you running on the Cat5e?

CAT5e cable can go up to 100 meters (~328feet) between active devices (cable modem to router/switch/pc, router to pc, switch to switch, and so on).
I have a tv 100 feet away with a quad coax cable from monoprice.

No problem.
You don't need quad to run 40ft. In fact, with respect to distance, quad probably isn't as good as some others.

how do you decide between double vs quad?

The ONLY time you would need quad would be if you live near transmitting towers or in a large area that has a lot of transmitting towers.

Split the difference with Belden 7915A tri-shield.

GREAT cable at a very reasonable price. The shielding is at least as good as quad, if not better. Rated to 3GHz, it surpasses the needs of any CATV or satellite install. Also, it takes standard RG-6 connectors, not the special quad connectors.
Thanks for all the useful replies.

Do you recommend a source for the cable and fittings?
In most homes by the time the cable has been routed through walls and or the attic most runs are probably over 40 ft from the entry point to the tv. I recently had DirecTV installed and we were running a cable from the multi-switch to a back bedroom and I asked him almost this exact same question. He stated that the cable run would be fine and that there would not be any need to amplify the signal unless it was over 125ft.

I can't offer any solid advice on a source. I've Googled 7915A a couple times and a place called Tri-State Electronics always seemed to have a decent price on the cable. Never ordered any though, so I don't know if it's a good place to do business or not.

My place was recently rewired with tri-shield (although not the Belden brand) and Thomas & Betts Snap-n-Seal compression fittings.
