i stumbled across an 802.11b client that claims to work as a wireless client for any Ethernet-enabled device. at $40 here , this seems to be an inexpensive way to hook up a remote replay for daily maintenance. manufacturer specs here

has anyone used this AP and will a single unit provide connectivity with a wireless router (versus two of these units in a bridge mode)? i'm trying to get away with a cheap maintenance connection to a living room 5040.

thanks...

For 40 bucks, I'd say it is worth a shot. Failing that, you might try one of the new Linksys "Wireless Game Adaptors". They seem to be priced less than the WET11 and I've seen several reports of people using them to connect Replay units.

I took a look at the specs and I must admit that I was surprised to see that this AP works in both infrastructure or ad hoc (bridge) modes simultaneously. I work with a lot of AP's (Cisco, Symbol, Linksys) and typically they either work in either the infrastructure (AP to AP communication for mobile roaming purposes) mode or as a bridge (point-to-point connections) but not both at the same time.

The real question is whether this AP will work in both modes if intermixed with other brands such as a Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc. You didn't say which brand router you have but I would call their Tech Support number and ask them if it will work "as a bridge" with your particular wireless router.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info, I have been looking for a cheap access point since my system ALWAYS hangs on "checking for new software" with my modem. I just ordered one and I'll let you know how well it works.

broadband is the way to go, for sure, but ... i was having the exact same "checking for new software" hang and what i found out in this thread solved that problem.

I have been using a WET11 and it has worked quite well. Recently I bought one of the new Linksys gaming adapters . Its manual looks exactly the same as the WET11 manual but its almost half the price (WET11=$90, WGA11B=$64.66 at Amazon).

Actually, I ordered the 54G version of it which gives me 802.11G at $15 more than the WET11 (WGA54G=$105 at Amazon). It should be here tommorow and I will let you know how it works.

I will, just so you know I am using a netgear wireless router. Looking forward to hopefully getting rid of the dreaded modem locks forever...

I'm interested in knowing if you can get video streaming to work. Video streaming with WET54G did NOT work - I eventually settled on 2 bridged WAP54G which works great but is more expensive solution. I suspect that if WGA54G is just re-packaged WET54G it will not work for streaming - should be fine for net connect, etc. though.

The WET11 that I am using right now streams just fine. I moved some shows to my home PC and watched them just fine using DVarchive.

What problems did you have with the 54G? Did the ReplayTV box not see the PC as a server?

I'm currently using a WRT54G to WGA54G setup with flawless streams (medium quality) in either direction. In my setup I have my computer and a Replay connected to the WRT54G and a second Replay and my Xbox connected to the WGA54G through a switch. Everything works great, including archiving shows off either replay. Previously I had tried a Netgear ME101 and it would choke when trying to stream or archive shows. I got it to stream in one direction without skipping, but it was not reliable. I returned it and picked up the WGA54G for $90 from Amazon and haven't looked back.

Networking was fine - just streaming at any quality was a no go, even with 100% signal strength. Had problems with WRT54G too - 2 bridged WAP54G was the only good solution at the time - but perhaps firmware upgrades since have remedied the WRT54G and the WET54G for streaming purposes.

I am very interested to know if anyone has actually gotten the Mitsumi Wavit11 Wireless 802.11b Access Point to work as a bridge between their Replay and wireless network. If you have, could you please post model numbers for Replay and Wireless network equipment. Many thanks.

Any luck getting those WGA54G's to stream? I was going to buy a couple WAP54G's and use them as a bridge but if the WGA54G's work, I may go that route.... although they are priced about the same.

I bought one of these little guys, and got it working last night with my xbox and the network, so there's no reason it shouldn't work with the replay.

Not a bad deal that overstock had them for, I might pick up a couple more.

The initial configuration was a little tricky, but once you get it setup, then it works great.

BTW, you have to have a PC to configure it first, then it writes all the settings to ram or something...

I'm interested in whether anyone has done any high quality streaming with the WGA54G. It will work just fine for net connect and remote scheduling but I am interested if when bridged to another WGA54G it provides an alternative wireless streaming solution.

Can you PLEASE tell me how you set this up to work with your replay?! I just got mine today, and can't figure out for the life of me what settings to use... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I got my WGA54G and I hooked it up to my computer and got it to configure, and connected through it to the internet just fine. So far, so good.

I then took it and hooked it to the replaytv instead of the computer. No IP address served.

Brought it back to the computer, and also tried a second computer. Works fine, DHCP gets IP addresses just fine.

Back to the replay, no IP address. When I was using the WET11, I had no problem getting the replay to get an IP address. Worked the first time. I'm not pleased at the moment...

Any ideas why this might be happening? I went to Menu | Setup and forced an IP reconfiguration on the replay and also tried a static IP in the valid subnet. Same results: no connection for the replay, works fine with a computer.

I also bought this crazy device Wavit11, and i only had couple hours to mess around with it but i couldn't get it working correctly. It was weird how you have to set it to 192.168.0.2 and then the software would work. The problem I'm having is I have a wireless base that sets ips from 192.168.253.101 and I it won't set the wavit to any ips in that range.

I understand i need to put it in infrastructure mode. But if someone can explain it so I can just do it real fast it would help, thanks. I tired disabling wep cause that was little confusing at first but i couldn't connect it. Thanks for your help. Seems like a good product.

It is possible that the WGA54G cannot get a DHCP served IP address via RF. When you configure it with a PC, it is plugged into a switch or hub. Once you plug it into your ReplayTV, it has to get an IP address via the RF. I have seen AP's that can be configured to get an IP address via wire or the RF. I suspect the WGA54G is bit water-downed in the firmware (the main difference besides packaging from the WET54G). Looking at the Users Guide for it, it looks like it is only designed for a static IP from what I can see.

I would hook it back up to the PC and assign a static IP address outside your router's DHCP IP lease pool. Once you have a static IP in it, I'll bet the Replay unit will get its IP address from your router and work just fine.

Good Luck!
