Ultra-high-definition, wide-screen system with 4000 scanning lines
For future broadcasts conveying a strong sensation of reality
This ultra-high-definition image system will be part of a future medium that
will convey a heightened sensation of reality to a viewer. The screen itself
will have a level of definition equivalent to that of gravure printing. The
experimental camera and display system, the first of its kind, has four
times the scanning lines of the ordinary Hi-Vision (HDTV) system (approx.
4,000 lines). We are using it to obtain fundamental data for the future
broadcasting system.
Features:
- The system uses a CCD imaging device and an LC (liquid crystal) panel
display device, both of which have 8 million pixels. They use a four-panel
color system in which two devices generate the color green.
- The video format has four times the scanning lines of standard HDTV, and
is intended for progressive scanning. The effective use of HDTV technology
has reduced the burden of hardware development. For example, the prototype
uses the HD-SDI (Serial Digital Interface) scheme for inter-apparatus
transmissions.
- Combining the large, ultra-high-definition screen with a 3-D multi-speaker
audio system further enhances the sensation of reality.
Specifications for the prototype system
Imaging system
- Imaging device : four 8-million pixel CCDs (R, G1, G2, B: G1, G2
diagonally pixel offset)
- Frame frequency : 60-Hz progressive scanning
- Lens : 2.5-inch monofocal lens, f = 50mm, F =1.4
Display system
- Imaging device : four 8-million pixel LC panels (R, G1, G2, B: G1, G2
diagonally pixel offset)
- Display size: 4 m x 7 m (diagonal approx. 320-inch)
- Display scheme : Front projection type, optical output approx. 5000 lm
Other
- Transmission signal : HD SDI signal 16 systems
- Audio system : 3-D audio with 21 loudspeakers (including 2 bass
speakers)
- Framememory : Approx. 30-second video image recording capability
- Convergence adjustment device : RB geometric distortion corrections
