Hi -

I am somewhat new to the RTV world and I have been looking at FAQ after FAQ about upgrading my 4040, and I keep getting mixed messages (probably because some FAQ's refer to earlier models). Anyway, I am wondering if I can go out and get a 120GB drive and add that to my original 40GB drive for additional space (2 drive upgrade). I am pretty sure I have read that I can, but if I do, will I need a fan? The rtvpatch.sourceforge.net site said the 2 drive is not recommended due to heat and not being able to revert back to the original setup. So, I thought the answer was to put a fan in the unit. The replaytivo.net site says that a fan is not recommended because 5400 rpm drives are cooler than the OEM drive (I don't believe that though) and dust would be deposited everywhere... So I am looking for some input on what I should do... go to a single 120GB drive (although I would rather keep both drives), or keep both drives (to make my own 4160). I am guessing that the RTV4320 comes with 2 160GB drives, so having 2 drives shouldn't be a problem.

Also, I've noticed that there is an extra IDE connector and power supply in the 4000 units... can I just plug into those, or do I still need a Y-Power Splitter? In all the FAQ's I've read, it states that I need that, but I am not sure if they are for older models or for the 4000.

Thanks for listening to my rambling...

you can add a 120GB drive to your 40GB drive, but you'll have to figure out how to physically add the drive...replaytivo.net has a very nice bracket for the 4000's (around $20)

unless you are very, very good with soldering & electronics you'll need a y-cable to split the power

ide cable that is in the 4040 will not work...it only has 2 connectors - you'll need a standard ide cable to replace it (some people recommend an 80-wire cable)

should not need fan - there is a fan already in there

as for what to do - you should save your original drive just in case you ever need it...but having said this i did exactly what you are considering and added a 120GB to the 40GB drive in my 4040
