42-50 inch Plasma/LCD suggestions??

2446 Views 35 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  BoulderGeek
Hello, I friend of mine asked me to recommend a good flat panel for his parents. They said they aren't really concerned about price, but I don't want to get extremely high end, because I don't think they understand how open ended that price statement can really be.

They would like a 42-50 inch that they can mount on a wall. They will be using it for digital cable, hdtv, and dvds.

Can somebody either point me in the right direction or suggest some good displays that I can start with. I really don't know much about these types of displays.

Thankyou

anybody have any suggestions? What companies make the best plasmas or lcds?
Well, right now, I would say that for plasma either Panasonic or Pioneer seem to be the favorites. For LCD, I say Sharp, Sony and Samsung are the top brands.

Either technology is a good choice as both have strengths and weaknesses. For your parents, a good 42" plasma would be a great choice. Sony maks a solid 40" LCD and Sharp has the excellent 45" LCD.

Pricing will be close on all of them with the plasma being the cheapest.

I have a Sharp LCD and love it, others will chime in with their opinions too.

Good Luck :D

Take a close look at the Samsung 4692 for LCD and the 50" LG plasma. When I did a head to head comparison at BB these two stood out over some of the more expensive better known brands

thanks andy, will do
Fujitsu P42hha40us is the best plasma I have seen IMO. Price is higher than most but not over the top.
Would this be the first HD set for your friend's parents? If it is, I would recommend Panasonic, the TH-42PX60U, great reviews, good picture quality and the ability to phase standard definition into high definition without making standard definition look like stick figures.

If they already have a Hi-def set but are still looking for a plug and play set, LG is really good and has good picture quality for a reasonable price.

Now if they want to go into something a little pricier (but well worth it) they might want to look into the Pioneers. The PDP-4360HD and the PDP-5060HD provide exceptional picture quality with great colors.

I hope this helps!
As far as 50" plasma displays go, Fujitsu is widely recognized as being the best - excellent blacks and the best internal processor.

In the stores you might not notice the difference in black levels due to the bright lighting that they're almost always displayed under however, at home, it makes a huge difference in terms of the depth of image, contrast, etc. - keep this in mind when you're shopping.

Sharp makes a really good LCD panel but at this point, plasmas still have the edge, by a large margin, picture quality wise - (I've had both).

It is their first HD set, and I will check out your suggestion for sure, thanks.

I just got the Panasonic TH-42px60u and I couldn't be happier with it. I did months and months of research and this is the only tv that I have found that has almost a 100% user satisfaction rating.
stupid question, these sets, can they be wall mounted or put on the table top stand? and I see the stand in the pics, do they come with the stands usually? thanks again
There are two "types" of plasmas on the market, consumer and commercial. Consumer versions, generally, are plug and play. Usually they come with a tabletop stand (small one,) internal tuner and speakers.

Commercial models are considered monitors, these do not have speakers, a stand or an internal tuner...generally.

The TH-42PX60U is a consumer version and should come with speakers, a stand and an internal tuner.

And yes, most plasmas can be wall mounted.

interesting, thankyou. Are the commercial versions cheaper, being they don't come with the speakers and or tuner?

Just for comparison purposes, how would a plasma like this compare to a Sony KDF-E50A10. that is the set I have now, and was just wondering how much better the plasma can be?
Generally commercial models are cheaper, kind of.

Most of the time when one purchases a commercial model they already have some sort of stereo system for the sound, though for most, the specified speakers can be purchased separately.

The internal tuner can be substituted for an external cable box or a satellite box

As for a stand, that can be purchased separately as well as a wall mount.

Just to let you know, generally if you don't have anything like what I mentioned already, the commercial versions are about even in price after purchasing all of the items needed. Usually the people who purchase commercial versions for residential use are looking for a custom set up or cleaner "look"

sounds good, thanks for the input. Do they make commercial versions of all consumer displays?

No, not really. Though a lot of times you will be able to find a commercial model that shares a lot of the same specs as a consumer model.
oh, ok, thanks for the info
