Hi there, i'm looking to get a new tv this year. At first 50in was the way i wanted to go, but now i can't decide. 42 or 50. My girlfriend is thinking that 42 is enough for ou room (9 feet viewing distance)

Since it will be my 1st HDTV, i'm trying to figure out if 50inches would be the right choice.

Anybody here had the same debate.

Viewing distance: around 9-10 feet

Budget: Around 1800-2100 Canadian $ (any sponsor here that ship to canada?) Love their price

I know that for this price range i can go with a good 42 inches plasma (pany, samy maybe pio if their price drop a little bit )

Or go with a 50inches like Hitachi, or maybe some other brand. (i wish i could go for a new panny or sammy for this size)

Do you think the price of the 50inches display will drop a lot this year? I also think that a 42 would be nicely place in my bedroom if in the future i get a 50.

The 50" models have dropped by a huge % in the past few months, they most likely wont drop much more, maybe $100 or so.

I think most people would agree the 50" 768P plasma is the best value in the HD Market right now. Aside from the silver Bezel 58" panasonic which is now under $3,000.

At 9 feet I would go 50", but I bought the 50" Pioneer. Quality is important, but you are talking 20% more screen, that is a big difference.

I am sure many here can talk about the Hotachi's, there are a number of owner's threads here for Hitachi, and if that is the only 50" model you are conisdering, you will get more feedback posting your question in there.

Good Luck.

One thing I do like about the 50" plasmas is that it easier to find a 50" with an actual 16:9 aspect ratio (768x1366), not a 4:3 ratio (768x1024) stretched to 16:9.

May not be a huge issue for you unless you want to view computer generated images on your plasma.

If you are going to move this plasma to the bedroom later on (like a year or two) I would go with the 42" Pio. If not, then get the biggest set you can afford for the money that looks good to you.

I agree, unless you have a mammoth bedroom. I just got my 42" Pio yesterday for my bedroom, and it already borders on (or surpasses, in my wife's opinion) being a bit much for a bedroom. Depends on your taste in decorating, of course....

Here is a creative suggested path...

Buy the 42" Panny for $1,500.

Invest $500 in Savient Pharmaceuticals, Inc....they have a monster drug in the pipeline for gout, which has a huge worldwide potential. Many estimate it will trade at 8X its current price in several years. This is an all or nothing gamble, but a very good one. Phase III trial results at the end of this year. This is a huge milestone. If the drug is approved, stock goes through the roof and/or company is bought out. If there are problems, stock sinks to cash value.... thus your $500 either turns into $2,000 or $100 by the end of the year.

Best case, you get both sets by the end of the year for your initial $2,000. Worst case, you spent $1,900 on a great 42" set.

Food for thought...

By the way, I had the same debate. 9'-10' viewing distance. Wife worried that 50" was too big. Went for the Panny 50" 9UK. 4 months later we both agree that the 42" would have been too small, and we could have gone bigger. I had the commercial 50" delivered for under $2,000 (US) with required accessories. It requires that I use a cable box and have external speakers, but that was the case anyway....awesome set.

Actually a 50 screen (1065 square inches) is 41% more screen than a 42 inch screen (754 sq in). It is a really big difference.

3 years ago I bought a 42" for an 8' viewing distance and almost immediately wished I would have bought a 50". If you absolutely can't afford the 50" yet, I would advise waiting until you can. You'll be glad you did.

Id go with the 50". I have the 42" panny and I sit about 6-7 feet away. While I am very happy with the set, theres still a part of me that wishes I had went for the 50" instead.

I'm thinking about the 9uk also, but i would have to buy an HDMI blade i think and some wall mount. that another 3-400$ (Canadian) more i think, and the TV here is already 2500$ so if goes to almost 3K$ for a blade and a wall mount or some feet. I don't want to buy a 50 just to buy a 50, i also want some quality.

I think it will be either i go for a 42 and get everything else i need (new dvd player etc..) or same some more money and get a 50.

I fell victim to the 8/42 = 19+% trap, LOL It is theortically 20% longer in the diagonal measurement, not screen real estate.

Thanks for clarifying

I'm 9 - 10 feet away, and I just ordered a 50" Sammy 5064 to replace my 10-year old 36" Sony CRT. I actually wanted a 60" 1080p, but decided I'd wait a couple years for the prices to get more reasonable. If you have sufficient resolution to present a clean picture, bigger is better!!!

The 42" plasmas do not stretch a 4:3 ratio, they use rectangular pixels and not computer generation. There is a huge difference. There is no "stretch", please do not go around spreading misinformation like this. There are plenty of threads where this is explained in greater detail if you do not understand.

Yup from 9-10 feet i think 50 is perfect....

I have an HTPC, so yes i'll be using my HTPC with my next tv.

I'll try to find a good deal for a 50, there is no hurry but i'll keep an eye in both size price.

Do you know if there is any sponsor that ship to canada?

thx

I just bought a 42" panasonic plasma, but for your needs and distance, I would say the 50" is the best way to go. I had a strict space limitation in the width of the unit and 42" was all I could fit in the space allowed. One other thing is that at the store with all those 50" and 58" HDTVs right beside it, it looked kinda small, but once I got it home it looked just fine. However 9' is a bit far and you would be best served by a 50" IMHO. Go for it!

I had a 50" 60u, I had some problems with the Tuner. When I returned the 50" they were all out, so I went ahead and paid a little more for the 58". I could not be happier. I sit 9 feet away and I don't feel like it is too big. The TV looks clearer than my 50" did. I don't know why this is the case, but even SD looks better. I agree with everyone else. The bigger you can get the better. I was left wanting more with the 50"....now I am completely satisfied.
